A YOUTH serving life for the alcohol-fuelled murder of Garry Newlove, a father of three who was kicked to death after confronting vandals outside his home, lost an appeal against conviction yesterday. A West Midlands police officer has been arrested by detectives investigating the murder of a teenage model. The 49-year-old woman is being held in connection with the death of Amy Leigh Barnes, 19, who was found stabbed at her home in Bolton, on Saturday. Ms Barnes had modelled for Cosmopolitan and Nuts Magazine and had appeared in Channel 4 teen soap Hollyoaks. Ricardo Morrison, 21, formerly of Birmingham, appeared in court on Wednesday charged with her murder. The amateur footballer, her former boyfriend, was remanded in custody by Bolton magistrates until 19 November. A college student who made a video with Kent Police and Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (QVH) to promote firework safety has watched the number of people viewing it on YouTube soar through the half million mark. The video is the most viewed educational contribution in the UK this month on the website, with (at time of release) 585,919 views. It is also the 6th most viewed video nationally on YouTube (at time of release) this month. More Islamist extremists are active in the UK than previously thought, a secret intelligence report seen by the Sunday Telegraph has suggested. There are "some thousands" of militants in Britain, with extremist cells concentrated in London, Birmingham and Luton, the quoted report says. The document also states the UK will remain "a high-priority target" for al-Qaeda for the foreseeable future. The Home Office said resources had been invested to tackle the complex threat. Following a lengthy and complex operation by Thames Valley Police Organised Crime Group (OCG), two drug dealers have been sentenced to over 12 years imprisonment and £207,350 has been seized from a man convicted of money laundering. Paul Berry, aged 38, from Kirkwood Grove, Milton Keynes, and Stephen Jackson, 43, from Lucas Place, Milton Keynes, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply class A drugs at an earlier hearing. Yesterday (5/11) at Reading Crown Court, Berry was sentenced to six years and nine months imprisonment and Jackson to six years and eight months. The chief officer of the States of Jersey Police has been suspended pending an investigation into his role in an inquiry into alleged child abuse. Graham Power has "strenuously" denied any wrongdoing and says he will rigorously contest any allegations. He said he could not comment publicly on the nature of the allegations. Earlier, detectives probing alleged abuse at Haut de la Garenne said no one had been murdered there and previously released evidence had been inaccurate. Source

The ECHO can reveal that Kevin Mighall, 51, and Steven Paul Kell, 51, have been charged along with six businessmen from prominent firms around the region.
