http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11882026 Top police officers who want to be elected as one of proposed new police and crime commissioners should wait four years before standing, say MPs. The Home Affairs Select Committee said there needed to be "greater clarity" on chief constables' independence. And it warned commissioners may not be able to cope with the workload. The report comes as ministers prepare to unveil radical proposals for directly-elected policing and crime commissioners in England and Wales. Commissioners would not only set policing priorities, they would also be able to sack chief constables. The proposed commissioners are expected to be introduced…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-11872761 Two police forces have been warned they could face enforcement action over the "disproportionate" use of their stop and search powers. The Equality and Human Rights Commission said neither Thames Valley Police nor Leicestershire Constabulary could justify their tactics. It follows a report which found "persistent race differences" in the forces' use of stop and search. Both forces said they were committed to ending discrimination. The Equality and Human Rights Commission [EHRC] review, published earlier this year, looked at the use of stop and search powers across England and Wales over the past decade. It showed black p…

Inquiry as theft suspect escapes Ashton police station A suspected thief escaped from custody after giving officers the slip at a Greater Manchester police station. An internal investigation is now under way to establish how Andrew Hargreaves managed to get out of Ashton-under-Lyne's custody suite on Friday. The 29-year-old was moved from his cell to another area of the unit but when officers checked on him 30 minutes later, he had gone. Police said "every effort" was being made to locate Mr Hargreaves. He was arrested on Thursday in an investigation into a handbag theft in Denton in October. Mr Hargreaves was moved from his cell at about 1900 GMT on Friday to a co…

Domestic violence suspects face being banned from home Violence against women 'must end' People suspected of abusing a partner could be banned from their homes for up to four weeks under government plans to tackle domestic violence. The proposed "go orders" could be used even if there was not enough evidence to charge a suspect. Ministers say this would allow police to act when a victim was most vulnerable, potentially saving lives. A year-long pilot scheme will start next summer in the Greater Manchester, Wiltshire and West Mercia police areas. A Home Office spokeswoman said if it was deemed successful by an impactment assessment it would be rolled out across Engla…

REGULAR Merseyside bobbies are posing as police community support officers in a crackdown on anti-social behaviour. The tactic has already led to one arrest in Netherton after a youth hurled abuse at an undercover PC on “mischief nightâ€, when incidents of nuisance behaviour can rise. A group of unsuspecting teenagers were left dumbstruck when their friend was arrested after the officer’s real identity was revealed. The female PC removed a PCSO jacket to show her regular uniform underneath and then arrested the 17- year-old on the Pendle estate, in Netherton. //Police officers said the teenager thought the PCSO had limited powers and lacked the authority to lock h…

A force spokesman said the man had put the cash on top of his car early on 18 November in Westcliff-on-Sea but had then forgotten about it until later. Officers are now checking evidence found at the scene and CCTV footage.
