A judge made legal history yesterday by returning her own verdict on four benefit cheats by finding them guilty of a complex housing fraud after dismissing the jury. The trial of the family who had built up a property empire worth £1.5million through false benefit claims was halted in March after the jury had retired to consider a verdict. Claims were made of an illegal approach to jurors and, fearing they had been 'nobbled', the judge, Miss Recorder Caroline English, ruled that she could deliver the verdicts rather than ordering an expensive and lengthy retrial. It is the first criminal trial to be held in England and Wales in which a judge has dismissed a jury to deter…

BBC News Charlie Gilmour, son of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, has pleaded guilty to a charge of violent disorder in relation to an attack on a convoy of cars containing Prince Charles. Gilmour, of Billingshurst, was accused of throwing a bin at the convoy during a protest in London on 9 December. The 21-year-old also sat on a Royal protection officer's car. The vehicle was part of a convoy taking the prince and the Duchess of Cornwall to the Royal Variety performance. He certainly got around a bit during the protest, didn't he? http://www.bbc.co.uk...kshire-11584843 The Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police has warned a 16% cut in police budgets could lead to "noticeable reductions in service". Chief Constable Sara Thornton said: "I have always felt that a cut of more than 10% will be very difficult." The 16% cut revealed in the Spending Review is spread over the next four years. She said the force would try to ensure frontline services were not hit. The Police Federation said frontline service cuts were "almost inevitable". Ms Thornton said: "Thames Valley Police won't find out our actual central police grant for the coming years until December, so I am unable to spe…

The UK terror threat level is being reduced from "severe" to "substantial", the home secretary has announced. The new alert level means the risk of a terrorist attack is considered to be a "strong possibility" and "might well occur without further warning". Theresa May said: "The change in the threat level does not mean that the overall threat has gone away. "There is still a real and serious threat to the UK and I would ask the public to remain ever vigilant." She said the decision to downgrade the terrorist threat level was made independently of ministers by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) and was based on the very latest intelligence, considering fact…
