Police chiefs are warning against possible changes in recruitment that they say could put "work experience" people in front-line roles. It comes after the prime minister told MPs the phone-hacking scandal called for a "broader look" at policing.Peter Fahy, of the Association of Chief Police Officers, warned of the dangers of direct entry to demanding job posts. Greater Manchester Chief Constable Mr Fahy compared such a situation to "a medical student acting as a surgeon". Mr Fahy said the principle that policing should not be left to the police alone was accepted. But he added: "That said, in terms of operational policing, the level of expertise, training and experience r…

High-performance cars worth hundreds of thousands of pounds were seized and drivers were fined during a police crackdown on boy racers in Knightsbridge. Ferraris, Bentleys, Porsches, BMWs and a Bugatti Veyron were pulled over for spot-checks last night. Alleged offences included driving without insurance, or having windows that were too heavily tinted. Residents say they are kept awake by the noise of cars, mostly owned by young Middle Eastern men, being raced into the early hours, and claim pedestrians are being put at risk. Many of the drivers, thought to include members of the Qatari royal family, come to the UK to escape the hot weather at home in the weeks before …

Her delivery may be more Brenda Blethyn than Helen Mirren, but Deputy Assistant Commissioner Sue Akers will be forever linked with the star of Prime Suspect. Having once helped Mirren research her role as Detective Superintendent Jane Tennison in the ITV drama, Akers now finds herself cast in a leading role - as the police officer leading the investigation into the News of the World phone hacking scandal. "Knowing Sue as I do, that is the one line that makes her cringe more than any other," says Metropolitan Police Authority chairman Kit Malthouse at the mention of Prime Suspect. "Sue is one of the most professional police officers I have ever met. Jane Tennison wasn't." …

When two police officers turned up on his doorstep at 11.20pm, Clive Lindoe feared the worst. But the father of three was shocked and angry to learn the reason for the late-night visit – an allegation that his youngest son had thrown an apple at another boy. They even threatened to arrest Charlie, 13, when his father initially refused to let them see him until the morning. The schoolboy was then woken up and taken to the 'bullying and brutish' officers, who made him sign what is believed to have been a neighbourhood resolution agreement, used to resolve minor disputes – even though he denied hurling the apple in the first place. Mr Lindoe, 50, has since made an official …

A trainee police dog has been denied a place in a police force after she was deemed 'not brave enough'. Vegas, a 19-month old German Shepherd, underwent a rigorous regime to become one of the latest recruits to the Northumbria Police dog section. She was trained to become fearless and deal with a variety of dangerous situations, including jumping through windows, tackling knife-wielding maniacs and barking and biting on command. But after displaying 'tentative' tendencies, trainers decided she didn't 'possess the courage needed to make it as a police dog'. Dog section Sergeant John Sim was one of those who made the decision to give Vegas early retirement. He said:…

TRUCAM: EVERY MOTORIST'S NIGHTMARE Enlarge The new TruCam device will not only records a vehicle's speed, but also captures it on film. It means that police will have irrefutable of speeding by motorists who will first learn of their offence when a fine lands on their doorstep. The new TruCam speed trap is small enough for traffic cops to carry on patrol. Mike Ricketts , head of sales at Tele-Traffic told Auto Express magazine: 'This new device collects more data simultaneously than traditional cameras and all that evidence gives the police much more chance of getting a conviction.' The technology embedded in the TruCam allows traffic cops to store the captured…
