An on-duty police officer was driving over the speed limit when he hit a man on his way to his granddaughter's 21st birthday party, an inquest heard. Leslie Bingham, 73, died from multiple injuries after being hit by a marked patrol car while crossing Penistone Road in Sheffield on 7 January 2017. PC Steven Hazelhurst was recorded driving at 41mph in a 30mph zone, Sheffield Coroner's Court heard. He told the inquest jury there was "absolutely nothing that I could do". The police car was not on an emergency call and was not using its sirens and blue lights. Mr Bingham, a retired metal worker, was heading for his granddaughter's 21st birthday party …

Graduates can become detectives "in a matter of months" with the help of a new fast-track training programme. The 12-week scheme is being developed in response to a shortfall of 5,000 investigators across England and Wales. Although recruits will begin working on cases within three months, they will receive training over a two-year period. Policing minister Nick Hurd said detectives "play an important role in bringing criminals to justice". The government has set aside £350,000 for the new detective entry programme, which will focus on problem-solving, crime prevention and safeguarding. South Wales Police Chief Constable Matt Jukes said: "Crime is…

A matter close to me given my better half works in the NHS and has been the victim of assault/abuse a fair few times in her service - we've discussed this topic before but every year there seems to be no end to this story, another rise in assaults against NHS workers with little end or joined up working in sight to combat this very complex problem and with the closure of NHS Protect body I cannot see this improving either. Most on here know my feelings on this but I firmly believe enforcement should be boosted with a professional organised effort to either further empower security protecting these sites OR establish some form of 'body of constables' dedicated to the …

Two special police officers who drove at more than 100mph despite not being trained to do so have been found guilty of gross misconduct. Special constable Terry Whinnett-James and acting special sergeant Umar Ajaz were responding to a burglary when the police car hit speeds up to 112mph. Neither was trained to drive above the speed limit nor activate the siren. An independent police panel said the officers, of Bedfordshire Police, should receive a final warning. The pair were despatched to a report of a burglary where the perpetrators were still on the scene on 4 July last year. 'Wrong thing, right reasons' Mr Ajaz was driving the marked polic…

An Uber driver armed with a samurai sword tried to attack police officers outside Buckingham Palace because he believed the Queen was "an enemy of Allah", the Old Bailey heard. Mohiussunnath Chowdhury, 27, swerved in front of a police van outside the Royal residence and reached for the four-foot blade in the footwell of his cab, it is said. A man "obsessed with revenge" against the legal system after losing a court case has been jailed for 15 years. A police raid on the Halifax home of Ashkan Ebrahimi in October 2015 discovered chemicals, swords, crossbows and high-powered air rifles. Evidence was also found that the 33-year-old had visited the home addresses of police officers and the judge involved his case. West Yorkshire Police said Ebrahimi planned on "harming a police officer". The force said he became "obsessed with revenge" after a court granted his former partner a non-molestation order, which led to him being separated from his young child. "The effects of this action sowed…
