Police may get more data powers Jacqui Smith said intercepting communications was 'vital' Jacqui Smith has set out plans to give the police and security services more powers to gather phone and e-mail data. The home secretary said police risked losing the ability to fight crime and terrorism without new laws. The government is considering creating a giant database to store details of every UK phone call and e-mail sent. Ms Smith stressed the "content" of conversations would not be stored but she wanted a national debate on what new powers should be introduced. And she warned that without increasing their capacity to store data, the police and security services would…

Obviously the force has decided not to release much information regarding this job. Very sad incident obviously and my sympathies with the families. The incident involved some really good work done by all the officers that attended with a full turn out from the various teams who all turned up to play their part in the first response phase (firearms, TPT and Neighbourhood officers).

I have to say, getting rid of the loophole and the ridiculous option of a blood/urine test if blown between 40-50 is better than being able to breath test randomly. We can already pull people over randomly and lets face it, who breatherlizes drivers after a road traffic offence anyway? Always after suspecion or RTC... Relying soly on the breath kit in the car, is that going to reduce the amount of paperwork needed for a drink drive? Thoughts?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7677671.stm Crackdown on cross-border crime Sixty five vehicles were stopped on the boundary between London and Surrey in a bid to crack down on traffic offences and "cross-border criminality". Officers in Surrey's Spelthorne borough have vowed to mount similar operations in the future. Sgt Andy Oldham said police carried out the checks on market day at Kempton Park when the area was busy. He said five people were stopped for having no insurance and all received a fine and six points on their licence. Officers also dealt with 21 other traffic offences with fixed penalty notices on 9 October, and received "numerous pieces of intell…

Full article: here -- Good or bad? Amusingly enough I was reading a PCSO blog recently where the author was griping about needing these very powers, which apparently BTP PCSOs already have. She also mentioned training and uniform being far more adequate with the BTP. Further reading in regard to that can be located: here

I wonder why no police action was taken??!! I know that schools are expected to deal with certain matters without involving the police, but this is serious (poisoning, drug dealing et al)! Surely in a case like this a complaint should be made irrespective of whether the teaching assistants are bothered about it. If a 15 year old girl is prepared to do this to them then what might she do next?! Just moving her to another school isn't going to change her behaviour. The school states they won't tolerate this kind of behaviour, but they haven't done anything about it other that washing their hands of her! I'm astounded.
