A digital radio communications system for the police is now fully operational in all London's Underground stations. It comes after a London Assembly report in 2006 said poor communication had hampered rescuers after the 7 July 2005 terror attacks on the transport system. Fire crews and ambulance staff use similar systems, although neither has been fully rolled out. Meanwhile, concerns have emerged about whether the police network will cope with demands during the 2012 Olympics. The Commons home affairs committee has said the network "struggles" when large numbers of users are concentrated in the same area. And a security source told the BBC the system could coll…

Offenders 'abused due to vests' Critics have warned wearing the vests will encourage attacks Offenders have been abused and threatened because of high visibility vests worn during community service, the probation officers' union has said. The union also said many groups that ran community service projects, such as churches and charity shops, had refused to make offenders wear them. The vests, marked with "Community Payback", were introduced for offenders in England and Wales on 1 December. The government hopes the vests will raise respect for community sentences. 'Demeaning' In one area a group of youths shouted "nonces, smackheads, lowlifes" at a work grou…

So this has been bugging me for a while, what happens if a suspect is arrested but has one or no hands, or is disabled? Obviously if they comply then there is no need for serious restraint, but what if they resist arrest? This may seem a derogatory question but has bothered me for some time.

British police, always at the forefront of innovative, modern techniques, have hit upon a fool-proof new way of tracing offenders leaving a crime scene: Slow news day? Well, the Times has helpfully included a Google map tracing the route that the cunning police officers took to follow the footsteps in the snow! Link. Their U.S. counterparts, not having the facility to follow footsteps, have relied on a more hit-and-miss method: Hoping that a prospective thief will be absent-minded enough to leave behind them a trail of popcorn.

Jan 9 2009 A STREET was sealed off in Coventry after a policeman was injured by a car. The drama happened as the PC was questioning a man in a black Peugeot 307 while on patrol in Blackwatch Road, Radford, at 1pm yesterday. The officer, in his 30s, suffered arm injuries as the Peugeot fled but he managed to call for back-up Other officers were on the scene within two minutes and the PC was taken to hospital for treatment. Police officers would have to pay thousands of pounds for their training under proposals being considered by Scotland's most senior ranks. Chief Constables have created a working group to consider plans which would mean members of the public paying for their own police degrees and then applying to join the service. The move would signal a radical departure from the traditional entry to forces in which successful applicants undergo a rigorous 15-week training programme at the Scottish Police College (SPC) at Tulliallan in Fife, for which they pay nothing. The Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (Acpos) has set up a group to look at the feasibility and savin…

Don't know if this has already been posted, and if it has, I apologise.... 65. We agree that the primary role of PCSOs should be to provide a visible presence, act as the "eyes and ears" of the police service and facilitate community engagement exercises undertaken to inform local priority-setting. However, we support a cautious extension of their powers so that all PCSOs are awarded powers that are currently at the discretion of Chief Constables. Moreover, the Home Office should consider piloting the provision of a warrant card to allow PCSOs to make arrests in exceptional circumstances, where lives are in danger. We understand that this will require more rigorous train…
