SELF-STYLED "Crossbow Cannibal" Stephen Griffiths said he had a vision that he would be locked up in the jail dubbed "Monster Mansion". Prison sources said yesterday the alleged triple killer saw himself inside top-security Wakefield, West Yorks, where he is now on remand. They said Griffiths, 40, had his vision less than a month before his arrest over three missing prostitutes. The "Mansion" houses some of Britain's most notorious serial killers and sex offenders. PhD student Griffiths told prison officers he regularly walked round the perimeter of Wakefield jail - 20 miles from his Bradford home - because he was so fascinated by murderers. He has been writing a thes…

Police are hunting a saboteur who has killed off floral displays in a North Yorkshire village taking part in this year's Britain in Bloom competition. The banned weedkiller has desiccated many plants A banned weed killer has been used in a spate of attacks which is believed to be a deliberate attempt to scupper the community's chances in the contest. It is estimated it will cost £20,000 to dig up the floral displays, remove the chemical and refill the beds. Les Hutchinson, chairman of Cayton In Bloom, said the village was devastated. He said: "Why on earth would you devastate the whole village? "We raise money to do the work and we just work in the village and d…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/birmingham/10198083.stm I've never quite understood how cases with things like sex offences can be opened or re-opened if there is such a big time gap? But that's just me, I don't know how any of this works. What I did pick up on in the above article is that the guy is supposed to be 44, but the time that the events he is being accused of doing took place were between 1977 and 1982. If I get my maths right, that would mean he was between 11 and 16 during the alleged time of offence? Does that mean for instance, anyone can be in bother for things like under-age sex with each other, even if it took place 10, 20, 50 years ago?

Police training exercises in which officers tackled volunteers playing the part of rioting East European migrants has been branded 'a breeding ground for racism'. More than a hundred college students aged 16 to 19 were drafted in for two violent scenarios. In the first exercise, they portrayed rioting football fans from the fictional Eastern European country Felacia. Insiders said Felacia was a thinly-veiled reference to Poland. Riots: The exercises were set up to help officers improve their handling of public order operations (file pic) The second involved impersonating an angry mob of economic migrants protesting at poor wages. Both took place in or near Peter…

With the recent news that the deaths blamed on mephedrone had in reality nothing to do with mephedrone, is it time to take drug policy out of the hands of the police, The Sun and politicians looking for a quick vote, and introduce a little common sense? Or is drug policy so far gone that common sense is the last thing that can be involved? Is there any justification in criminalising people for the "crime" of taking mephedrone based on such a ridiculous law? Two teenagers whose deaths were linked to the “legal high†mephedrone, prompting politicians to rush out a contoversial ban, had not taken the drug, reports suggest. Leading scientists last night criticised the …

Staffordshire Police is using powerful vehicle management software to help keep uninsured drivers off the roads. The Easy Link Vehicle Information System helps officers ensure that seized vehicles held by vehicle recovery operators are not released unless the correct driver documents have been produced at a police station. Previously, recovery operators relied on paper release notices issued by the force to members of the public who had presented their documents at a police station. The Easy Link system automatically alerts the vehicle recovery department and the recovery operator as soon as the successful production of documents has been completed. Only the person …
