http://www.birmingha...97319-27206949/ West Midlands Police 'to axe 300 longest-serving officers' PLANS have been drawn up to axe 300 of the longest-serving officers from West Midlands Police, The cull of the longest-serving officers was revealed to shocked senior detectives at a CID meeting last Thursday night. The unprecedented cost-cutting proposals will be discussed by force management and West Midlands Police Authority on September 30. But insiders described the plans as a 'done deal', claiming notification letters bearing individual names have already been typed up. A well-placed source said: "It's like having a hand grenade thrown into the police force and wa…

http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/north-east-news/evening-chronicle-news/2010/09/11/twisted-mum-slashed-herself-and-blamed-ex-72703-27247875/ Does anyone else think that the sentencing here is strange? If the ex had genuinely carried out this attack he would quite rightly have done time, but she attempts to send someone down for something he didn't do, wastes loads of hospital, police and court time and subsequently money of the tax payer having self inflicted these injuries and gets a suspended sentence.

Police chiefs are to take an axe to officer overtime and benefits signalling the end of the police 'gravy train'. Rank and file officers have reacted with fury after radical proposals for a huge raft of cuts to shift payments and add on bonuses was leaked. Police chiefs want to slash overtime pay in a bid to reduce the £500million a year bill to taxpayers, which has nearly doubled over the past decade despite a record increase in police numbers. I can say I am slightly worried as someone in the recruitment process that this may cause somewhat of an atmosphere or resentment towards specials....I certainley hope it doesnt! http://www.kentonlin...cials_plea.aspx "Kent Police has defended advertising for unpaid volunteers just days after its top cop warned up to 1,500 staff face the axe. The force has raised eyebrows by launching a recruitment drive for around 200 special constables. It followed a statement issued by Chief Constable Ian Learmonth last week revealing his fears that one in seven paid officers could lose their jobs. Kent's top cop said he may be forced to make the cuts because of a savage spending …

From Sky News The Police Federation in England and Wales has warned of disastrous consequences if the Government imposes tough budget cuts on the service next month. The body, which represents rank-and-file officers, says proposed cuts of 25% could result in up to 60,000 police and civilian staff job losses nationwide. The Federation claims many more murders and rapes would go unsolved as a result. Its leaders know they risk being branded alarmist - but say they have thought long and hard before going public with their concerns. Their conclusion is that the results of the Comprehensive Spending Review, due in six weeks, will make policing in its present form unsustai…

I thought someone else might post this but as they haven't here it is. From The Register yesterday http://www.theregist...hotography_s19/ Followed by todays post from The Register http://www.theregist...filming_rights/ There's also an interesting discussion going on here http://www.marcvalle...rotesters-film/ including input from the photographer and the Head of Media Relations at Sussex Police. I'm suprised that the police cannot copy this stuff and return the originals to the photographer with 24-48hrs as it's not exactly a complicated task.

Hampshire Constabulary plans to axe 1,400 posts - 20% of its workforce - including police officers. The force needs to make £70m worth of savings over the next four years. Chief Constable Alex Marshall said there will be redundancies, positions left unfilled, redeployments and voluntary redundancies. Staff and unions will discuss the plans which will go to the police authority. The police federation said it was a return to the "dark days of policing". The force, which employs about 6,700 staff, also plans to share and sell buildings and increase collaboration with other forces, especially Thames Valley. Chief Constable Marshall said: "I know all our staff join the c…

The age old debate about whether Scotland should have one national force is about to be reignited http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/crime-courts/police-to-unveil-merger-plan-1.1054126 Just what we need - more central belt bias and Strathclyde-isation of working practices, despite better systems being run in other forces. SID anyone?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-11227357 Interesting that he can be found guilt of "careless driving" even though he wasn't driving at the time. I assume that the exact moment of the offence was when he left the vehicle - not when it actually rolled down the road. I've dealt with an RTC where a car rolled down a road and into the side of another parked car - both vehicles were locked and the first car was found to have had it's handbrake incorrectly set. He got found guilty of quitting the vehicle (failing to set the handbrake). I don't know if the UK is different than here.

Obviously not in this instance...
