http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-12876127 The controversial 50-50 recruitment process for the PSNI ends on Monday after 10 years. The process was introduced as part of the Patten policing reforms and was aimed at increasing the number of Catholic officers. When it was first introduced, Catholics made up about 8% of the police. Secretary of State Owen Paterson said that with almost 30% of officers now from a Catholic background, the practice could no longer be justified. Nationalist politicians have viewed it as a success, but unionist politicians claimed it unfairly discriminated against Protestants.

I've had this book for many years, and have just finished it. If anyone can get their hands on a copy, it's a very worth read. The book is a compilation of interviews with RUC Officers, families and support staff . Harrowing accounts of their experiences whilst they served under exceptional circumstances.

A UK licence holder who was arrested and charged for DR10 in July 2010 failed to appear in court having returned to England two days after the arrest. I assume that the person will have received a driving ban in his absence. This person had a previous ban for DR10 12 years earlier. The person is now employed in England as a vehicle delivery driver. If there is a warrant for non-attendance in a NI court, can it be actioned in England? Is a driving ban from an NI court on a UK licence holder valid in England? Is the onus on the employer to check that the driving licence used is valid? How long do the NI courts / DVLNI take to inform DVLA? Being aware of the above, …

Peeps We all know what we know about how things are over here at the minute. What I am about to advise is simply something that is, for someone of my advanced years, 'common dog' to use an old expression. Ditch the force bars, photos, any reference to where you work or what you do. Change your username if you have to. If 'they' get any clues and, God Forbid, it leads to something nasty turning up under your new car some morning, there could be steps taken to see if you actually contributed to the situation in some way. Also, don't be naive enough to think that 'they' are the only people searching for any info. In short, peeps - don't tell anyone anything they don'…

I'd like to take this opportunity to wish my fellow PSNI and RUC(GC) and RUCR (GC) colleagues, serving and retired, and their families a safe and happy Christmas period.

22nd December 1976 R/Const(P/T) Sammy Armour, 37, married with three children Sammy was reversing his car in the driveway of his home, outside Maghera, Co. Londonderry, when a booby-trap device exploded which killed him instantly. His wife and family narrowly avoided death or injury when the blast blew in all the house windows. Always remembered. [edited for clarity]

Has anyone gone through the above - what was your thoughts on the course? Did you think it was good or too basic etc?

Hey, It was reported the other day that the PSNI are freezing all recruitment with 'immediate effect' due to a budget cut down. Does anyone have any more info on this, ie. I am half way through my recruitment process (vetting and medical next). Do they intend to not let any candidates go any further through the process? I realise not many people will have info here, but just thought I'd ask in case there's any PSNI folk on. Cheers, Paul

I know its up for review in March 2010... Below is an extract from a few questions is one asked Question 1 Why must transferees compete in the recruitment process when they are already fully qualified trained and experienced police officers? Answer Unfortunately, we do not have a direct transfer mechanism at the rank of Constable because of the current temporary legislation governing appointment to the Service at this rank (50/ 50), and therefore serving officers must apply through the external process - though if successful, training is condensed and service is normally carried forward from previous force. Question 2 Are there any plans to allow the transferr…
