The ninth anniversary of the untimely death of PC 5584 Jon Henry will be marked with the force’s traditional memorial on the spot where he died.
On 11 June 2007 popular officer Jon was brutally murdered in George Street, Luton, while responding to a report of a man attacking members of the public with a knife.
Jon was first at the scene and carried out his duty to protect the public by courageously coming between the suspect and potential victims. He paid the ultimate price that day when he was stabbed twice, sustaining fatal wounds.
This Saturday (11 June), nine years on from Jon’s death, senior officers and those who served alongside Jon will host a short service at his memorial stone outside BHS in George Street, Luton, and lay flowers in his memory.
Today (Friday), this tragic anniversary is to be observed with the opening of Jonathan Henry Place, a development of apartments in Leagrave near where Jon grew up.
The affordable housing scheme, consisting of 28 shared ownership flats, 20 affordable rent flats, and nine supported units, which will house 186 people in Leagrave was developed by the charity Paradigm Housing Group, before being sold to Luton Borough Council for management.
Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said: “Our popular, hardworking and courageous colleague PC 5584 Jon Henry paid the ultimate price on that fateful day in 2007, when he was killed in the line of duty. Jon lost his life protecting members of the public, as he did proudly every day. We remain incredibly proud of him, of the bravery he displayed, and of the sacrifice he made for the safety of his community.
“The Jonathan Henry Place housing development is a fitting tribute to our fallen colleague. It will help people and stand the test of time in the area in which he lived and served, as will our memory of him.”
At this painful time for the force, as every year, our thoughts are shared with Jon’s family. The force flag will fly at half-mast from 9am today until Monday (13 June).Source
