Neil McCover Superintendent Strathclyde Police Died 8 October 2010, aged 55 Died when his bicycle was in a collision with a car near Eaglesham whilst cycling with colleagues during a lunch break at the force training centre. Neil was based at the Strathclyde Police Training and Recruitment Centre at Jackton. He is survived by his wife and adult daughter.
  2. Ian Dibell GMPolice ConstableEssex PoliceDied 9th July 2012, aged 41 Whilst off duty in Clacton-on-Sea he had cause to intervene in an incident close to his home. Protecting the public from an armed male he sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Posthumously awarded the George Medal for Gallantry.

Richard Gray Police Constable West Mercia Police Died 6 May 2007, aged 43 After unarmed officers, attending an early morning disturbance at a house in Shrewsbury, were held at gunpoint, he arrived at the scene with an armed response unit; as he and a colleague went to the back of the house he was confronted by the gunman and he was shot in the head with a rifle and killed. The gunman was found shot dead nearby; an inquest returned verdicts that PC Gray was unlawfully killed and his assailant committed suicide. Ricky, from Dundee, served as a soldier in the Black Watch from 1981 to 1997 when he joined Cheshire Constabulary. In 2003 he transferred to West Mercia where he was a firearms officer attached to the Armed Response Team at Shrewsbury. He had received two Divisional Commendations for assisting in rescues, a Judge's Commendation and two Chief Constable's Commendations for bravery in arresting violent suspects armed with firearms. He was survived by his wife, his two adult sons from a previous marriage, and his sister. Posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery. Like this
  4. Kevin StoodleyPolice ConstableAvon & Somerset ConstabularyDied 11th March 2015, aged 41 He was on duty in Frome when he became unwell. He was rushed to hospital but sadly died shortly afterwards. He joined Avon & Somerset Constabulary in 2003, he worked in Street, Shepton Mallet and Frome. He was one of 22 officers from Avon & Somerset Constabulary who provided mutual aid to the Police Service of Northern Ireland in 2013. He is survived by his wife, two sons and daughter.

Ian David JonesPolice SergeantWest Mercia PoliceDied 2 March 2011, aged 53 Collapsed and died from heart failure whilst on supervisory duties at the Dog-Section office at West Mercia Police Headquarters in Worcester. Ian had served with the Metropolitan Police since July 1982 before transferring to West Mercia in August 1986 and had been a dog handler at Force HQ since 2002. He is survived by his wife, their three sons and two daughters.

Laura Ruth Williams Police Constable Metropolitan Police Died 19 February 2009, aged 41 Collapsed and fell unconscious while on duty at Greenwich Park Police Station, she was taken to hospital but died in the early hours of the following day, having suffered a brain haemorrhage. Laura joined the Royal Parks Constabulary in September 1998; in 2001 she was diagnosed with Leukaemia but returned to work after treatment. After amalgamation into the Metropolitan Police she worked on a response team and recently as a Safer Parks Officer and had several commendations for her good work. She is survived by her partner and two sons, her mother, four brothers and one sister.

David Donald McPherson Police Constable Lothian and Borders Police Died 23 February 2011, aged 51 Died in hospital after suffering a brain haemorrhage while returning home soon after finishing duty at the Force Communications Centre, Bilston, Midlothian. David had joined the Force in May 1982 and worked at the Communications Centre. He is survived by his wife and twin daughters, his parents, two sisters and brother.

Philippa Reynolds Constable Police Service of Northern Ireland Died 9th February 2013, aged 27 During a night shift she was on patrol in an unmarked, armoured, police vehicle, with two colleagues when a stolen car went through a red light on the Limavady Road, hitting the police vehicle. Philippa was a rear seat passenger and was killed instantly, her two colleagues were also injured. Philippa had joined the Police Service of Northern Ireland after leaving teaching, she had two years service. She is survived by her mother, father and two sisters.

Daniel John Cooper Police Constable Wiltshire Police Died 1 February 2010, aged 22 Died in a road traffic accident, whilst responding to an urgent call for assistance from officers dealing with an incident during the evening at Trowbridge, when his police patrol car left the road and collided with a tree near Bradford-on-Avon. Dan joined Wiltshire Police in May 2007, following service as a Special Constable and was stationed at Trowbridge where he worked as a response officer. He was a single man and is survived by his parents and brother with whom he lived.
  10. Anthony 'Tony' Sweeney QPMPolice ConstableWest Yorkshire PoliceDied 27th December 2012, aged 58 Having taken ill whilst on duty he was sent home from work during his early shift. Whilst driving home to Harrogate he pulled over and suffered a fatal heart attack. Tony was a neighbourhood officer in Roundhay, Alwoodley & Moortown team having served with West Yorkshire Police for nineteen years. In 2001 he was awarded the Queen's Police Medal for his work in the community. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter and grandchildren.

Dee Marie WeatherleyDetective ConstableThames Valley Police Died 13 December 2008, aged 31 Killed in a road traffic collision while travelling to report for duty at Aylesbury, in the early morning, when her car was struck by another vehicle, which crossed the carriageway travelling in the opposite direction on the A413 at Hoggeston. Dee was appointed in November 2003 and joined the CID in 2006 working on the Priority Crime Team at Aylesbury where she was recently commended for an off duty arrest. She is survived by her partner, a serving officer, with whom she had been expecting a baby; her mother and stepfather, her father and her sister.

Kevin Declan GormanConstablePolice Service of Northern Ireland Died 23 November 2008, aged 24 Died with three other officers while responding to a call for assistance from other officers in the early hours when their police vehicle lost control and struck a wall before bursting into flames near Warrenpoint in Co. Down. Kevin joined the Police Service Of Northern Ireland on 12 August 2007, he was stationed at Kilkeel police station in the Newry and Mourne District. He is survived by his partner, two children; his mother and brother.

James Robert Bawn MageeConstablePolice Service of Northern Ireland Died 23 November 2008, aged 27 Died with three other officers while responding to a call for assistance from other officers in the early hours when their police vehicle lost control and struck a wall before bursting into flames near Warrenpoint in Co. Down. James joined the Police Service of Northern Ireland on 6 November 2005, he was stationed at Kilkeel police station in the Newry and Mourne District. He is survived by his parents and two sisters.

    Purpose of this area: The Memorial Garden has been created solely to remember our colleagues who have died whilst in the execution of their duties. Please feel free to add comments to any thread in memory of the named officer or to discuss that particular officer or maybe even to share your memories of that officer or event. This area IS NOT for general discussion on what could have been done differently or what could have happened with different training or equipment. If you wish to discuss a specific event further and in more detail then please start a new thread in the appropriate forum area. Any posts not adhering to these rules will be removed without warning and without explanation.
