Return to News 6 June 2018 Four leaders of an international people smuggling network have been given combined jail sentences totalling more than 1,400 years in Greece, following an investigation supported by the National Crime Agency. The investigation followed the rescue of 112 migrants in a joint operation involving the Hellenic Police, Hellenic Coastguard and NCA in March 2017. The men, women and children from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Iran were found living in squalid conditions in caves and farm buildings in southern Crete. Return to News 5 June 2018 A man has been jailed for nine months after National Crime Agency officers found more than 15,000 pictures and videos of child sex abuse on his computers. Tony Aslett, aged 52, pleaded guilty to seven counts of making indecent images of children when he appeared at Kingston Crown Court. Some of the victims in his collection appeared to be as young as 18 months old. Aslett was arrested at Buckingham Palace, where he worked as a visitor services warden, on 27 April 2015. Officers caught Farhan Iqbal, 31, in the toilets at Terminal 5 taking from a courier who had flown in from Colombia. The drugs had a street value of £480,000. Iqbal, of Hanson Gardens, Southall, London was on sick leave and not due to work on 23 November last year. But he arrived at Heathrow Terminal 3 in his uniform and made his way to Terminal 5. Fen Chen, 32, was jailed for six years and three months in November last year after a National Crime Agency investigation. Return to News 31 May 2018 A 35 year-old man has been found guilty of sexual assault against a girl in 2014 as part of the National Crime Agency’s Operation Stovewood. Khurram Javed, from Faraday Court, Rotherham was on trial for three counts of sexual assault and one count of rape against two girls – one who was 13 at the time – between 2008 and 2014. He was found not guilty of two counts of sexual assault and one count of rape, following a seven day trial at Sheffield Crown Court. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment. In 2017, 1,304 cases of sextortion were reported to the NCA’s Anti-Kidnap and Extortion Unit (AKEU) by police forces across the UK. This is almost three times more than the number of cases reported in 2015 in which organised crime groups (OCGs) use fake dating profiles to befriend victims and encourage them to live stream sex acts.
