This is a strange thing for to post on here but hopefully you guys can help.

Got a letter through from HMR&C saying my Tax Code is BR for "Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime"

I have tried getting some info and obviously found the site about MOPC.

http://www.london.gov.uk/priorities/policing-and-crime/about-mopac

But what am I being taxed for?

I was previously training with the Met Police, but I have now just rejoined and I get this come through, I've had x2 letter in the post for the past 2 weeks.

Anyone know anything about it or am I having a little moment of divy'nes.

Thanks.

BR is popularly known as "emergency tax".

If you've just joined the Met as a civvy then you are an employee of MOPAC (replacing the old Met Police Authority). You simply need to get in touch with your HR and ensure that they've got your P45/P46 so you get on the correct tax code ASAP.

If you aren't a Met civvy then it may be related to your training to be a special, in which case I wouldn't worry too much about it as the Met should not tax any of the expenses/allowances which you claim.

I raised this with HMRC and Logica Payroll. It's wrong, unless you work for the Met, you should not have a tax code.

I've been told that Logica are talking to HMRC about fixing this. Crucially if you have to do self assessment, you must check your payslip to ensure no tax is deducted from your expenses. If they have screwed this up too, then you need to get it sorted otherwise you have to enter your pay details from your Met P60 into SA.

I was previously training but I couldn't claim expenses as I left training, I'm finally back in and awaiting my Day 2 and then hopefully rejoin MSC training.

But right now I am not employed by the Met.
