hi, just stumbled on this site and noticed what a helpful bunch you all are! Here's my problem, I'm looking like starting at Essex police college at the start of June, and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations regarding accommodation? It seems quite expensive renting alone, and yet house sharing can be a minefield! Especially with a senior officer coming to do a home visit! I'm looking to move down at the start of may from a fair distance away, any help greatly appreciated!

Go to http://www.rightmove.co.uk/, type in where you want to live and then use the sliders to select how much you can afford to pay and far away from that place you're willing to go.

Depends if you're looking in Chelmsford itself, or surrounding towns? In Chelmsford, Springfield's ok, as is Broomfield and Writtle - stay clear of Melbourne, Outside the town Braintree's cheaper, but be careful what area you go into, some parts are nice, others pretty dodgy I guess the same could be said about Witham and Tiptree! Dunmow's nice - although a bit further out, the further south you go the more expensive it gets cause it gets closer to London,

Good luck!

Alpha, look at witham which is where I live. More reasonable than Chelmsford and you get free bus travel which takes about half an hour to get into Chelmsford.
