Time for a new laptop?

I have had my Sony Vaio VGN-NS10L laptop for just over 4 years now and it has served me well.

Its gets regular use every day and still works pretty well (it is a little but slower than when I bought it, but it is running more stuff now)

The laptop itself does have some problems, there is a 12mm black line down the right hand side of the screen where I once picked it up by the very top of the screen and cracked whatever it is that makes the screen pixels light up.

It also has a 2mm horizontal line running just above the start menu that is always grey,

Some of the buttons on the keyboard are coming off (they flap about but don't fall off)

Every now and then the screen will go really dark so that I cant really see it but this is fixed by suspending the session and resuming it.

About 18 months ago a bit of the hard drive went funny and was lost, affecting the laptop but almost all features remained working.

About a week ago a similar thing happened but the stuff that was lost wasn't part of windows so it was easier to fix.

I haven't costed it but I think it would be more costly than its worth to repair it, so my dilemma is:

Do I buy a new laptop now before this one is FUBAR? or should I wait for it to finally die?

Any thoughts/help appreciated!

I'd get a new one while the current one is on its way out, other wise when it does finally go you will have to rush about getting one (that is if you use it for work, etc.)

That ofcourse is just my opinion, I also wouldn't like the feeling of "will my laptop turn on today"

How often do you use it? If when it dies you don't mind going a few days without until you get a new one then it doesn't really matter.

It also depends if you have whatever you need off it. It probably is better to buy a new one as soon as you can so you are able to copy off all your documents and stuff while the old one is still alive. Better that then realising you didn't copy something and now your laptop is dead. I'd imagine you already have it backed up seems your hard drive already packed up once? You can still take the hard drive out and use it in a dock or another laptop if you did need to retrieve anything in the future.

It looks like a new screen will cost you around £60 - not sure if it's genuine for that laptop but it's said to fit.

New hard drive depending on size, RPM etc will probably be another £60

and if you're lucky you can pick up a completely new keyboard for around £15 I expect.

I'd suggest getting a new one though.

I'd get a new one. I reckon the average life of a computer is about 3 years, so this thing has served you well. As said above, there are some good deals on in the January sale (I know, as I've been looking too) and if you wait until it dies those offers might not be on. Plus, in some places if you trade in a working laptop, you get some money off too.

In the last 3 years I have bought 3 computers from www.pcspecialist.co.uk (one gaming PC, one workstation for my dad and a gaming laptop). High quality, configure a build to what you want/need and the forums are great. You can tell people what you want and they will tell you the spec you need. Each build is bespoke, you can get a PC in less than 15 days and a laptop in under 8 days.

I avoid the high street computer shops like PCWorld like the plague. They are poorly made, cheap and outdated. The staff prey upon the average Joe and sell them stuff they don't need.

Thanks for the replies.

I do use the laptop every day, but only for surfing the web and checking email etc.I use it to write out my invoices for work but I have an old PC that I could use if this laptop breaks. I can use my phone to do pretty much everything the laptop can do so I am not dependent on the laptop.

The difficulty is that I want a shiny new laptop to play with now, but then if this laptop lasts for another 6-12 months then I could then get an even better laptop for the same money!

Tbh technology is advancing faster than everything around it.

RAM for instance...

When you buy a laptop at the shop they give you around 16GB of RAM now. My laptop has 10GB and I am never using any more than 3GB and that's with documents, itunes, skype, 5-6 tabs open in chrome. Even the best games don't take up too much.

So although there is likely to be better laptops and there always will be otherwise the companies will go bust, not many people actually have a use for all the **** they pack in to them. If you got one now with 16GB RAM and at least an i5 processor that would last you a good 5 years before any games and software were even close to using that amount.

I had the same dilemma but I eventually persuaded myself that it would be a good idea so I bought a Samsung Series 7 Gamer laptop, couldn't be happier with it.

Its not the technology that limits what laptop I will go for, Its how much I am willing to pay.

My Vaio cost me £380 four years ago and came with 3gb of ram and a 2ghz processor, but with a budget of £400 today I cant get that much better than I already have!

I'll find you one ;)

Any particular brand? I wouldn't recommend a Sony any more because they're on their way out.

I've found some cheap Toshiba?

Lenovo are the number 1 seller of computers now, overtaking HP. I'd be more inclined to go with that. It has an i3 processor as well which is miles better than the Samsung one.

I don't know what they're like as a supplier. That Samsung only has 4GB of RAM, but another 4GB RAM stick will cost around £15 bringing you just over £400.

Look for refurbished. They tend to go a bit cheaper. It just means the box has been opened but never played with...unwanted christmas presents and such.
