TheSwift 35
I've just purchased a pre-owned Xbox 360 (not the slimline version) and it appears to be working fine. However, the noise it generates from the fan resembles a plane taking off! It's stupidly loud. I also own a pretty old HP 510 laptop which i've had from new which suffers from the same problem. If i had the dosh to spend i'd just buy a new one of each but seeing as I don't I thought i'd see if anyone on here has any suggestions. Does anybody know how to stop it making such a racket! Thanks in advance.
Administrative Account 7
If it is an early XBox 360, that was pretty much how they are! i couldnt believe the noise of mine!
BarnsleyNick 10
When a fan sounds like that, the best option is to usually try and clean it or just replace it. Because you say it's quite a loud noise, it could be the fan bearing and best option would be to replace it, but it's easier said than done unfortunately on a laptop, I cannot speak for an Xbox. SZ2 826
Try cleaning the fan and removing all the dust from it/ hoover around it and if that doesn't work try elevating the xbox off the ground/carpet and see if that reduces the noise.
gaspode 0
I'd replace the fan, there are a selection of guides available showing you how to do it (just google "replace xbox 360 fan quiet" or something) It's a little fiddly to open an xbox but not too hard. Hotlush + 1
Try installing your games to the hard disk http://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-360/audio-video-setup-and-use/install-play-delete-game#d2fdc4bbbcfe4daca2ae25fd9e659908 It'll still be loud for the first few minutes but after that it'll stop. gaspode 0
That would help with a noisy DVD drive but not a noisy fan!
Administrative Account 7
You could always try a bit of percussive maintenance*... * ie., give it a thump!
Pablo Montoya 64
Yeah, just try to 'hoover' it wit the thin hose-end to get rid of the fluff. It works on desktops - hopefully will also work on the xbox (although I've never tried this)...
TheSwift 35
Problem solved. Me and a friend took the Xbox apart and found that most of the internal parts (especially the fan/cooling system) were clogged with dust. I simply hoovered and cleaned all the dust out, put it back together and its now working fine without much noise at all! I'd advise anyone with similar issues to do the same BUT we did void the warranty by taking it apart.
