My 2004 vauxhall corsa makes a funny noise when in gear 1 and changing gears. When revving the car not in gear it still make the same noise. It sounds like a diesel van.

It's Just passed a mot and had a service

Check the oil, mate does 20k miles p/yr in a 1ltr Corsa, never checks the oil. Low and behold it started sounding like farm machinery, no oil in it what so ever.

I don't think MOTs check things like that.

Not got any real chance of diagnosing that over the internet unfortuantely old bean! :( Could be any number of things, but that particular car will be a cheap fix and I doubt any decent mechanic in the land wouldn't be able to fix it.

Regarding MOT test, it involves no testing at all of the drivetrain such as the engine or transmission, with the exception of stuff like CV boots on front wheel drive cars.

Doing a quick google search it appears that these knocking noises are quite common on a Corsa. It seems that they are usually related to the timing chain/tensioner or the hydraulic tappets/ camshaft lobes becoming worn.
