Knee Injury and Training

Evening all,

I recently applied to a Scottish Police Force, I've sat and passed my SET tests and fitness, passing 2nd time around but only just (9.4, pass is 9.2). I've decided that that not good enough and I'm determined to improve my C/V fitness levels. I don't want to get to the Police college and let us English folk down by being the most unfit there.

I've started a hefty regime of interval training, including weighted sled pushes and pulls over 15-20mtrs and endurance runs of around 3-4km. I've reduced my strength and "size" training to nothing which I'm not keen on but it must be done :D

My main problem is that when running, I can feel my left knee twisting and eventually I get pain in the joint on the inner side. I also get pain in the arch of my foot and ankle. I notice that my left knee gives off a significant amount of heat and is flushed red, while my other is not/does not. My right knee and leg is absolutely fine and I don't have any problems with it! When I deadlift or squat I dont really suffer any pain, it's just when running.

Anybody got any ideas of how to proceed with this? I'll list my known injuries and problems just to give a better idea of what could be causing it.

Injuries/"ailments":

Left Ankle, Spring '11 - Torn ligament after falling down a flight of stairs, trip to A&E, told no lasting damage. Forced to change the way I walked for a number of weeks because of the massive pain.

Right Ankle, Summer '11 - Broken along with 3 toes, cast for 3 weeks, told no lasting damage. Once again changed the way I walked because of the cast.

Flat feet (born to be a cop, obviously :D) - Diagnosed by myself and no idea what effects this may have.

Equipment:

Nike Running trainers

Compression knee wraps

My plan of action is to go and get my "gait" analysed by the local specialist running shop this weekend, can anybody else recommend anything else, or relate this to a similar experience?

Cheers.

From personal experience, i had a long-standing problem in both knees where when i ran for a prolonged period, i would get sharp pain behind the kneecaps- being a referee, this was really not helpful as you can imagine. anyway, my cousin's a chiropractor, and when i mentioned it to him, he diagnosed the problem as being down to me having flat feet, as this was causing my knees to bend inwards, causing the pain- might be worth having a look at getting orthotic insoles?

Sounds like your ligaments are weak on the inside of your knee compared to the outside. I myself have had some major knee problems. Broke one and tore the ligaments in the over was just one of them (had to have sugery to rectify). The best thing to do when it starts to hurt is stop and rest. If not you'll do more damage. I'm only 18, and I have the same problems as you do. Also start trying to build up the muscles in your knees. I did alot of hydrotherapy when recovering from my surgery and it was brilliant. Also get on a leg press if you can. Low weight, low intensity until you can gradually build it up.

Get to a running shop and have your gait measured, they will then sell you a pair of running shoes that will stop your knees from twisting when running.

See a physio - I had a niggling pain for months which I ignored and then developed into a full blown pain on running. Saw a physio and it was identified as IT Band weakness giving rise to some other issues - queue some painful treatment and exercises and all is beggining to look rosy!

I'm hypermobile and this causes my knees some serious issues. I have a knee brace that I wear (when doing really strenuous activity) and some compression supports I wear just doing normal sport. I also have orthotic insoles specifically designed to sport and they have helped me no end.

This combined with intestive physio to strengthen the muscles above/below the knee to hold it all in place seem to have done the trick and I am in far less pain than before.

I went to see a podiatrist about aching feet as well as my knees, and he fitted me for the insoles. In the end I didn't get custom ones but generic sports ones which cost around £50 but are really sturdy. Definitely worth seeing a podiatrist about flat feet too as I suffered with mine when I was younger but my podiatrist and physio helped out no end!
