cwhite90999 40
Hi, I posted on here a while ago about my housemate not paying me money he owes me, I tried being reasonable like was suggested on the comments but to no avail. Some of me thinks because he is from a culture where you respect your elders and never question them, it is difficult for him to accept and listen to what I tell him. Sometimes I think it is just because he is tight fisted and refuses to pay. Sometimes I think it may be because I haven't pestered him enough for money and he's assumed I am happy to pay (which I am not). I decided to take the bull by the horns because I will be moving out as soon as my contract allows, but I am not going to be shafted by another house mate. Well not shafted, perhaps not the right way of putting it. The housemate I had at undergrad, he still owes me money but the trade off at the time was he and I get and got on, I could over look the money most of the time because we got on but I won't deny there were times it got me a little cross. My current housemate hasn't paid me for internet for 2 months, I never charged him for a TV licence because I thought he was an international student (turns out he isn't but to be honest I don't think he is here entirely legally, but I have no proof other than a gut feeling that isn't as in tune as NCIS LJ Gibbs). Anyway, I emailed him explaining what he owes me, I emailed the following after checking the tone etc with several of my friends: H*****, You owe me £100 for the gas and electric, I have shown you paper bills I have shown you electronic bills. Thus far I have paid nearly 3 times more than you have and I have not been here 3 times longer. It is not fair and is extremely unreasonable that you refuse to pay up. You owe me £20 in Virgin media bills. I certainly sent you the one for March and you did not acknowledge it, I may not have sent you the one for April however they are both attached to this. If I do not receive payment for this by Wednesday 16th May I will be blocking your access to the internet as I am more than entitled to do, it is in my name putting my credit score on the line and I will not be messed around. You also owe me money for black bin bags and cleaning stuff I use in the bathroom. I do not know if you noticed but the other day I had cleaned the bathroom and mopped both the kitchen and bathroom floors. I am fed up of being the one who always cleans the bathroom and the toilet. You owe me £15 for that. I do not mind cleaning the kitchen as more of the mess in there is mine. I was being reasonable and not charging you for a TV licence, however I will be doing so now. I have been paying that monthly since January, you owe me £60 for that. I have attached all the details to this email. Chris I had attached all the necessary documents, every time i mention gas bills he wants to see them and seemingly not see the ones I have despite me showing every single letter I've had from them, sometimes even opening up letters from them addressed to myself and accusing me of being a liar and a thief when a late payment letters turn up (I explained all these to British Gas before the letters were sent out, or made payments on the due dates). I have nearly every single paypoint payment receipt for the transactions, 2 for his money totaling £125, all the ones I have found for myself right up to topping up the new pre-pay meters comes to £320. As for the cleaning stuff, he never lifts a finger to clean the bathroom, the only times it gets clean is by my effort, when I scrubbed the bog the other day as I was just sick and tired of the mess I have no idea what I cleaned up, all I know is I don't make that kind of mess, no acknowledgement of it being done from the housemate. On the email I also attached details of the TV licence and the the Virgin Media bills, I CC-ed my Landlord into the email, texted him to inform him of this. My Landlord replied saying to let him know if housemate doesn't do as agreed. I got the following reply from him this morning: Please do not disturb me by like this silly email. I am not going to pay any bill until you give me the original bill from 15/11/2011 until now. this is the first and last time I talk with you about the bills. Please let me know when you get the original bills. So I am at a cross roads what to do. I emailed my landlord forwarding the reply explaining that I cannot deal with the housemate anymore, chiefly because I cannot keep my temper even when dealing with the guy. I don't even think that he realises the house is now on pre-pay meters and when they run out he is topping them up as I have done it twice already. When I talk to the guy he just starts to shout me down and raises his voice above mine not even listening to what I am saying. He might as well be Gollum from Lord of the Rings saying "I'm not listening, I'm not listening". When I try to talk to him it's more than anger, it's a deep burning hatred of him which I find difficult to control and when he called me a liar and a thief despite me having paper proof to the counter of his point I had to slam some doors otherwise I would probably have been down the police station over an assault charge. I can keep my patience with a lot of people and put up with a lot, but this guy just makes me unable to keep patient. What should I do/how should I go about it? Only saving grace is I have all but sorted new accommodation to move into when the time to move out comes here. Apologies about the whining/angry/mixed up tone of this post, just not sure what to do/how to go about it.
Vorn189 4
You have to pay a TV licence monthly? I was of the understanding that the BBC TV licence is a one-off cost for the Television. What are the original bills he is talking about? Did you not pay the bills he did at some point?
cwhite90999 40
TV licence can be paid monthly, as this is a house of multiple occupation I am not paying it in one go if there could be different people here potentially month to month. He is talking about bills from when he moved in. There was one bill that went from when he moved in on 15th November up to 5th January, tehre was a second one that went from 15th Nov to 23rd March. The latter had money out standing. As this was a smaller amount of money my housemate insists that it is all that is owed, £188, making that £94 each or £6 a week since he moved in. It is not possible to run a house on that little, even my landlord said the housemate is talking out of his .... I had another bill through, basically a final bill for quarterly before the new prepay meters were installed, making what he owes £100.
SteveAM 29
I think it's past time to move into that new accommodation. Nothing you can do will change this person and it puts unnecessary stress on you. Leave him to sort it out and don't forget to cancel any utilities you pay for before you leave.
Merlin820 32
You have to pay a TV licence monthly? I was of the understanding that the BBC TV licence is a one-off cost for the Television. It certainly is not a one-off. I wish it was. £145.50 for a colour TV, £49 for a black and white set although the chances of a black and white TV still in existence are slim. It can be paid weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually. It's up to you. But it must be paid otherwise you'll find yourself with a fine. cwhite, is there a separate tenancy agreement for each room? cwhite90999 40
cwhite, is there a separate tenancy agreement for each room? I think it's past time to move into that new accommodation. Nothing you can do will change this person and it puts unnecessary stress on you. Leave him to sort it out and don't forget to cancel any utilities you pay for before you leave. Merlin - It is a separate agreement for each room, with agreements running out at different times. There is a clause in the agreement, which will be in all of them under a section called Further Charges to be paid by the tenant it's as follows: to pay council tax (or any similar charge which replaces it) in respect of the Premises either directly to the council, or by paying that sum to the Landlord, or the Agent, where the Landlord, or the Agent, has paid that sum to the Council (whether legally required to do so or not) within 14 days of receiving a written request for such monies To Pay all charges falling due to the following services used during the Tenancy and to pay such proportion of any standing charge for those services as relfects the period of time that this Argeement was in force: -gas - water (including sewerage and other environmental services) - electricity - any other fuel charges - telecommunications annoyingly nothing to do with housemates paying playing with that bat, but playing the other it is paying towards fuel/telecommunications costs. SteveAM - If I do one now I still have to pay landlord money for the room I'm in, I could site to my landlord all the money I have paid already and just have not got the money to do so, but I do not want him going to my guarantors, my parents, as they are only able to be a guarantor on paper. they are in no financial position to bale me out with a months rent if needed. plus as i still owe a water bill on this place, it's a toughie. Plan is before I go, get water bill sorted in both names, then ask for my half to go to a new place and deal with it from there. as it is housemate is getting blocked off internet on wednesday as that is in my name and if he doesn't pay why should i continue to allow him access to it. I appreciate some of this might be my fault for not pestering the guy enough for money and being harsh with him, but I just didn't want to cause horrible friction. Just wanted to be pleasant, the guy basically started acting like a first class *insert word of choice here* the first time I asked him for money towards the internet, and more so when I first asked for gas/leccy money. Jeebs1546081084 561
http://www.thesheriffsoffice.com/services/debt_collection/ Cut him off on every service you can, as you say, why should you pay and he doesn't?
Guest
I agree with Steve AM. The problem is if the bills are in your name then it will be a nightmare for you to try and force him in anyway to pay you (especially if your landlord isn't doing anything to help). Best bet is to move out and cancel any further payments. If you have to share with anyone again in future then make sure you are clear with them from the outset what they are liable for, and try and get half the bills in their name as opposed to yours. Good luck. I'm moving this to 'help me', as it's better suited there.
Million 100
Feel for you, one of my housemates has been a right nightmare this year and it's looking dubious as to wether we'll get the last few months bills out of him before he moves out in June. There's clearly no reasoning with the bloke and he's just taking you for a ride, I wouldn't try to anymore, cut him off from everything you can and be prepared to foot the £100 yourself. You never know he may start to see sense once he can't use the internet or anymore. You could also make sure you turn the hot water off at every opportunity when he's using it, i.e. just as he gets in the shower. (childish but satisfying i'd imagine). You could also turn the gas of at the stopcock when you're not using it, he may not no where it is and therefore he wont be able to turn it back on (could even padlock it if it's in a cupboard of somekind). Just make his life difficult and he'll soon change his tune.
