What law have I broken?

I would very much appeciate it if some one could explain to me what I did wrong and or what offences I may have commited today.

here is the scenario.

I was parking my car in a car park, I went to reverse out of the space and was beeped at by what appeared to be an aggressive driver.

I straightend up my vehicle, finished parking and exited the car. Parked behind me starring at me was the car that beeped.

I asked him what the problem was......he got out of the vehicle and told me i reversed out infront of him.

I started arguing my case back explaining that this was a car park ect, at this point he pulled his police officer badge and said " we can take this to my office if you wish".

I told him to get back in his car and went to walk away. At his point a bystander came accross and told me I was in the wrong and shouldnt have reversed so quickly in front of him.

Okay so it appears that i was in the wrong for accidently reversing out of a space in front of someone.

But the officer then told me I would be hearing from him as I was aggresive and that he had a independent witness who was concerned.

( i think he used the concerned word or something similar, but was referring to my reversing).

I left the scene with this guy taking photos of me in my car on his mobile phone.

So my question is..... what law have i broken? What exaclty have i done wrong so I can avoid this again and what am i likley to expect to hear from him?

I think "asking him what his problem was" and "telling him to get back in his car" may have been a bad move, sounds like it antagonised the situation further. If you were aware that your driving had been a little below par then perhaps a simple apology may have done - however, we weren't there and only have your side of the story!

Personally, I would wait and see what happens next.

There appear to be no laws broken under the Road Traffic Act if you're in the right, however if you didn't check your mirrors properly before reversing then it could lead to a Section 3 (careless driving) of the Road Traffic Act, otherwise you should be fine, the officer should know better really. If anything comes of it then just explain what happened.

I know you haven't said you did, but in the heat of the moment did you use any profane language?

Thanks for "some of the comments"

I was kind of hoping for somthing maybe a little more constrctive than "this isnt going to end well", as I was hoping to learn from this lesson.

To be honest he kind of had me flustered when he showed me his car and was offering to take me to his office.

You are correct I should have just appologised but was rather flustered by the situation of him and the women bystander ganging up on me.

Profane language? as in swearing.....no i dont hink so, at most i would have used the f word, what is the significance of that?

To answer your last question about language, profane language does indeed mean swearing. Swearing in public when members of the public can hear what you are saying and I doubt you were speaking with a subdued tone, in fact I suspect you were being rather vociferous, is an offence. It is an offence under section 5 of the public order act 1986.

Unless the guy provided some form of paperwork and/or got any form of ID from you I very much doubt anything will come about from this.

There is also the argument that the fact that you were in the middle of parking your car at the time the other driver should have gave you the space to do so safely instead of being in a hurry to get past you.

Despite what laws may or may not have been broken, I'm pretty suprised we haven't had any comments from the regular users that often suggest that officers don't just 'badge out' for a minor infraction that they happen to see in the street.

At most? Wicked.

I expect nothing at all will happen. Dont do it again.

Once again thanks for your comments.

They are all being taken on board.

I certainly wont be doing this again and am hoping to learn from my lessons.

To be honest the suspense of "waiting to hear from him" is starting to eat away at me and making me feel some what uncomfortable.

If you're genuinely sorry then do show remorse if anything ever happens. ( not sure what)

I'd say it was scare tactics but i could be wrong.

Just make sure you look before you reverse and do so carefully once it is safe and you should be fine in future.

Oh and be polite to people especially when you may be in the wrong!

Spot on was just what i was thinking manners cost nothing and being polite is much better at resolving an argument than going in guns blazing

A sorry i didnt see you there would of probably solved the situation before it arose
