Hey guys,

Basically I went to bed last night at 10.30, shut down the pc and it was installing updates. I woke up this morning to find it still installing update 3 of (8 I think). What do I do? It tells me to not turn off the computer or unplug the power. I remember a few years ago when I did just that to my laptop and it went foxtrot uniform.

Any help greatly appreciated guys!

Many thanks in advance,

Chris

You havent got a choice really, Hold the Power Button in until it turns off (5 - 10 seconds) wait for everything to stop (Fans). Then turn it back on, Hopefully it will then boot back up fine.

It may say that windows hasn't shut down correctly but just choose "Last Known Good Configuration".

Let me know how you get on

Let it keep installing the updates unless there is no HDD (Hard Drive Disk) Activity then you may have to force shut down.

Its always advisable to leave it at least 12-24 hours to see if it has completely locked up before attempting any force shut down, as it has the possibility of causing the Windows installation to become corrupt, which means a good portion of time on a re-install.

So my advice would be to leave it alone for now - come back to it later on this evening and see if its still on 3 of 8, if it is force the shutdown as explained above and hope it doesn't go U/S on you.

When I get lock ups try:

1. Ctrl+Alt+Delete to see if that does anything,

2. then the reset button on the case (if it has one),

3. then power button on case (when hard drive not spinning)

4. finally switch off PSU at back of case if the rest do nothing

Thanks for all the replies guys, much appreciated!

I've just got back in now and my computer was finally off. Turned it on and it installed the updates very quickly and all is well!
