Ontopofahill! 5
Unfortunetly mate the first car isnt going to be "looker" My first was a Fiat Seicento whilst also having to pay 2,500 (insurance) for the pleasure! (Being only 17 at the time) They are also quite cheap. Edit: Also the engine was a 899CC ... Beast! Edited August 24, 2011 by Ontopofahill! Garion 0
My first car was a 995cc Nissan Micra, was a great little car, insurance was cheap and it took a battering from my sisters and I. It needed very little maintenance too (which is always something to think about with cars costing less than £1000!) No point buying a car for £1000 if you're gonna have to spend another £1000 at the first MOT...
PCSD 329
My first and current car is a 51 reg Peugeot 106 1.1. Cost more than a £1000 (£1800 due to low mileage) two years ago. First year insurance cost me £3500 as i was 18 at the time. Now two years on with 2 years no claims it has just droped to 1800 for the next year :/ Great little car, not had any faults apart from a loose exhaust bracket. Truncheon + 154
The size of the engine isn't always the be all and end all of what your insurance is likely to cost. My first car was a £400 Audi 80. It was 17 years old, and had a 1.8L engine. The insurance cost me £850 TPFT back in 2007. I suspect the insurer knew that a) it was unlikely to get stolen and b) it was too boring for most boy racers. My advice for a young person is to go via an insurance broker rather than a comparison website or other big insurance name. As an experienced, older, driver they don't seem to be that competitive now, but by gosh, when I was younger I was saving hundreds compared to the horror stories I had heard of (and seen again in this thread!). Burnie 2,084
NFU are usually quite good for insurance Anyway - my first car is a 1.0l Vauxhall Corsa. Just enough power to accelerate comfortablyfrom standing and can easily reach 70mph and beyond (after having to drop it into 4th and floor it to escape some near crashes on the motorways in the past). My first years insurance was £1,800 with direct line.
Gelf 201
if it was my money I would be looking at a 306, a ford focus or a skoda fabia, owned or driven all 3 and was impressed by all
Wilson1990 3
I got a 106 1.1 51 plate for about 1.2k and my insurance was 1.2k Third party fire and theft with AdrianFlux however I had to do the Pass+ course within my first month of the policy or it would void. My first car was a corsa as well, one of the old model ones, then I got a new model corsa, then i got a 1.2 sxi corsa and now im driving a new astra. Overall I found the corsa to be very reliable, very economical and the insurance/road tax were cheap enough too. The only down side is lack of boot space and (if you get a 1 litre engine) lack of power although they are grand for city/town driving
CSC1 + 131
Can get a nice second hand clio for that kind of money, quite nice little cars. Avoid like the plague! I had a 51 plate when I first passed my test in 2007 and it was forever suffering with electrical faults.
