Computer problem

I could really do with some help from one of you computer wizzes out there

My computer has suddenly developed a problem and I do not have a clue why.... when I go on to Utube I can watch the video fine, but the sound is really really quiet, almost like it is not there at all. I have checked all the volumes and they are fine (I hadnt touched them when the problem started). When I play a MP3 track from the computer the sound is fine. The sound is also fine when I play an embedded video (ie, from BBC, or PS.com!). This only happened a couple of days ago, and I dont recall changing any settings on the computer, although I have downloaded a windows update.

I have tried restoring the computer to before the update, and have tried reinstalling shockwave flash but it has made no difference

Does anyone have any idea what has happened and how to fix it (and please be very gentle because I come from an era of slide rules and log tables, not computers!!)

I am running windows vista pro

Thanks in anticipation

Hi mate

Perform these steps and let me know if the problem still occurs

  • Uninstall your internet browser and restart your PC - Then, reinstall it ensure that it's the latest version

Then

  • Uninstall your audio driver and restart your PC - Then, reinstall it ensure that it's the latest version

I'm hoping that performing these actions will solve the problem

Cheers for the advice

The browser is Google Chrome, do you mean uninstall Chrome and reinstall it again - would that mean I would lose all my bookmarked sites??

How do I uninstall a audio driver, and where would I find a new one to install

Sorry if I am being thick

Yes, completely uninstall it and then reinstall it.

See this link which explains how to backup your bookmarks.

In relation to the audio driver, run Microsoft Update or a driver scanner (recommendation)- Don't worry too much about this step unless the above one fails to solve the problem. :aok:

Are other flash sites quiet for you as well? BBC iPlayer?

I doubt the driver will work as MP3s are fine.

Also what version of Windows are you using?

Not sure if it is still valid but my mate had this issue some time ago and he sent me link to some advice in case I ever had the same problem, here's what it said, it was a couple of years ago though

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=209540

you may need to check a check box for "pcm to show up

r-click sound icon and select "open volume control "

then "edit " and click on preferences

then put a check in pcm
