LS! 22
Hi there, was just wondering what would have happened and what will happen should this guy inform the police of what happened earlier!. I'm riding on my bike down a main road in a cycle lane, the traffic it queuing, I am approaching a pelican crossing, the lights are GREEN. A postman carrying his collection of letters looks at the traffic, glances in my direction. Assuming that nothing is coming as the traffic is at a halt, he steps out to cross the road - AS I'M JUST ABOUT TO PASS HIM. As he steps out, I brake suddenly but theres no hope, I knock him over. My speedometer was reading 15mph just before the collision. There was nothing I could have done to not hit the guy and on impact, he rolled about 6 feet. As he got up the lights had changed to red and the green man and beeping noise started to go. I apologised for hitting him but explained I was on green and he in fact crossed on a red man without looking properly. I informed him I was a trained first aider and asked him if he wanted me to look at him (he was wearing shorts and he did roll on a rough road surface!) he declined and said he understands it's his fault. 5 minuted after the accident, I suffer severe pain in my upper body from where he's smacked into me. I decide to take a trip to A&E and I've got bruised ribs across both sides of my chest and a bruised collar bone. I have also jolted my neck as I moved my head to avoid his head from colliding with mine. As he drove off and apologised, I left it at that but now I'm beginning to wonder if I should have informed the police. If there police were iformed, what would happen to me. I know that should I have been in a car I would be breathalised etc but is there a set routine for cyclists? Thanks Luke

wanabe 243
First thing you should do is inform Royal Mail and explain to them what has happened.
Hyde 328
First thing you should do is inform Royal Mail and explain to them what has happened. Out of interest, why? There's surely no legal obligation to do this.
Shikari + 351
Why would anything happen to you? You said you were on green, he acknowledged he was in the wrong. It's not like you can swap insurance details if you're on a bike. Again I ask...why would anything happen to you?
wanabe 243
Out of interest, why? There's surely no legal obligation to do this. Because a member of their staff has been involved in a incident where a member of the public has been injured!
Hyde 328
Because a member of their staff has been involved in a incident where a member of the public has been injured! I'd say it's their responsibility to go to Royal mail and fill in an injury at work form, not yours.
wanabe 243
I'd say it's their responsibility to go to Royal mail and fill in an injury at work form, not yours. You really are not getting this are you!! The cyclist has been injured by a Royal Mail employee! The cyclist is not at work. Chances are knowing it was his own fault and knowing he admitted it was his own fault he will not want to fill in a form. LS! 22
Thats exactly why I'm asking, I don't know if anything could happen? thats why I asked if there was a set routine behind or what?? I'm not asking for legal advice, I'm asking those of you who are police officers/special constables what, if anything, would happen. The reason I'm asking is because I've always wanted to join the police and I wouldn't want something like this to come and bight be on my the backside when I go to apply! Another thing is, should that guy go into shock tonight and suffer anything serious, there is no record of the incident if he hasn't informed anyone I'm taking it from whats been said I should just leave it then? [ Why does the fact that he works for royal mail influence anything? He's an MoP. He was injured at work??
wanabe 243
Ok. If LS! Has any long term affect from this incident he would want to know the person involved - So he would have to inform Royal Mail If the postman involved has any long term affects Royal Mail would want to know what happened - They would speak to LS! It is an "accident on duty" where a MoP has injuries. If a postman told you to P*** off im sure you would phone them to compalin but seem reluctant when somebody appears to have injuries! Strange......

Strange...... Those are quite different things. One is intentional and abusive, the other is an accident.
Enraged flea 1 93
I would leave it as it is no one is massively hurt. Most likely a accident it could only end in the employee being investigated for something that really is over and done. If you are unhappy then phone in if someone is really hurt then inform the Police if not then I myself would not worry about it. LS! 22
Haha it was a christmas present! And okidoke, will just leave it then. Was just asking advice from those who are experienced with stuff like this...I come worse of I think - his sack of letters appeared to have helped break his fall! was just a shock to feel someone bounce off you at such a speed and see letters flying around! Just hopin he doesnt have/didn't have any delayed reactions such as shock etc! Thanks for the replies- wasn't quite sure what to do! Luke Edited June 29, 2011 by LS!
