RETIRED detectives are being brought back by Notts Police to bolster its ability to investigate homicides and serious and organised crime. The move follows last month's decision to redeploy 70 specialist officers – including homicide detectives – to deal with volume crimes such as robbery, burglary and violent offences. The redeployment is a key part of a new force initiative, called Policing for You with 20/20 Vision, which aims to secure greater and quicker reductions in the number of crimes. A four-year-old girl was shot dead in cold blood and her mother critically injured by a man who opened fire on them with a gun and then turned the gun on himself. Police who rushed to the house today after neighbours reported a "domestic dispute" found a bloodbath when they arrived. It is understood the girl was shot dead at point blank range. Officers tried desperately to save the severely injured child but were unable to and she died in their arms at the house. The badly wounded woman was rushed to hospital where she was described as being in a critical condition. A police officer jailed for causing the death of a teenager by dangerous driving will not be temporarily released over the festive period. Pc John Dougal, 41, accelerated to 94mph (151km/h) without his blue lights or siren before hitting Hayley Adamson, 16, in Newcastle last year. He was convicted of dangerous driving and jailed for three years in May. It was believed the officer could have been allowed home temporarily by way of a special prison licence. A call by the Conservatives to make it harder for people who tackle burglars to be jailed has been rejected by the Director of Public Prosecutions. Keir Starmer said the law "works very well" and prosecutions were brought only if "unreasonable" force was used.
