Lest we Forget - PC Keith Henry Blakelock QPM

PC Keith Henry Blakelock was murdered on duty on 6th October 1985. We will not forget.

PC Blakelock was married with three young sons and had been a police officer for five years. He was a home beat officer in Muswell Hill, north London.

He was murdered during the riots on the Broadwater Farm Estate in Tottenham, which started after Cynthia Jarrett died of heart failure during a police search of her home on 5th October. PC Keith Blakelock was assigned to a serial of 10 constables and a sergeant protecting firefighters as they dealt with fires started during the riots on the Broadwater Farm Estate in Tottenham. As the rioters pushed the officers back, PC Blakelock stumbled and was quickly surrounded by a mob of about 50 people. He was attached with knives and machetes and was found with a six inch knife buried to the hilt in his neck. He received over 40 wounds.

PC Blakelock and the other constables from serial 502 were awarded the QPM in 1988 and their sergeant, David Pengelly was awarded the George Medal for placing himself in front of the crowd in an effort to save PC Blakelock and another. He was armed with a shield and his truncheon.
