Very well handled, in my own opinion.

Totally agree could have easily justified lethal force during this incident, courageous restraint shown by officers involved.

A less lethal option from supporting officers would have been handy though.

Fantastic.

That video speaks volumes. All credit to the officer.

I was surprised a less lethal option was not deployed. I did notice there was at least one officer carrying taser.

I'm not sure what that officer carries but I think that is a good example of why if officers carry a firearm then a taser should also be carried to open up tactical options.

Sort of rains in the parade of those who says all US Cops are trigger happy.....

I thought he was tased in the end if you look & listen carefully, not all departments seem to go to the expense of everyone carrying taser, hence the delay in it's use.

In that situation I wouldn't want to rely on taser!

Have any of you seen how limited taser is!

I think with a taser that officer would have been cut at least.

A lot of police in cities like Chicago and parts of California don't give their staff tasers as they consider it inhumane. Would you rather be shot or tased?!

Lots of restraint.. the guy is obviously mentally ill or attempting suicide by cop :o

The video's description states that he was wanted for a murder in another state.

Wow, that was actually quite upsetting to watch... That poor guy was obviously dealing with some serious mental condition. Any info point towards whether or not he was killed?

His behaviour is more indicative of someone who wants to get away rather than someone who is acutely unwell which is why the knife is produced at the point of the search commencing. After he is shot first time his behaviour could be attributed to shock.

It's important to be mindful of mental ill health but not revert to it as the default position. A lot of people are mad but many are just bad too.

Not sure i agree with you but Mad, bad or in shock doesn't really make a huge difference in a spontaneous incident like that.

If possible back off give them and yourself time and space, if safe to do so. Then start thinking of what options you have.

I think that's what saved him - the first shot stopped him long enough to get distance - otherwise it would have ended differently and the officer would have had to keep firing (with total justification) until he dropped the offender or got space.

I was told 8 years ago when I joined the police not to asssess those we deal with by our own standards or I'd end up disenfranchised.

It was sound advice.

This bloke has allegedly murdered someone and attacked a police officer. I dont hold much sympathy for him.

For what its worth, our training is that when we are confronted with a deadly weapon we deploy a lethal option first, then if there is time to deploy a less-lethal device like a taser or beanbag round then that can be explored.  The thinking is choose the tool that is most likely to stop the threat and still be reasonable.  Unfortunately, as we've found out on the street, the taser doesn't always work 100%.  The officer can miss, the taser malfunction, clothing can get in the way, or we've even had the suspect knock the probes out.  Considering that the taser is a one-shot deal if it doesn't work you might not have time to transition to your firearm before you get stabbed.

Lethal force is always a last resort but sometimes the suspect doesn't give much choice.
