South Africa - motorcycle police officer pursuing and firing gun at fleeing vehicle

I've not seen anything quite like this.  And I don't think I'll ever hear a radio update "magazine empty, car full of holes" in my entire policing career.

Seems really odd a police officer to be riding a motorbike on patrol without wearing gloves. He also was a bit embarassed trying to stop the driver at gunpoint after dismounting and having an empty magazine: lucky the driver didn't start shooting back then.

Well what bothered me is the kids at the side of the road whilst he's shooting at a fast moving car, one handed riding a motorbike at speed.

As a biker he didn't appear to be able to shoot at speed as he was right handed and every time he wanted to shoot he had to let go of the throttle so was either nearly stationary or slowing down.

Or perhaps he didn't want to as he would be far more likely to miss the car and hit a bystander - whilst there is absolute logic to your point it also seems he took the sensible precaution of waiting until the speed was very low and range very short.

He also had to play a bluff (that fortunately worked) as he'd emptied his magazine as the chase ended (note the slide locked back) and with no time to reload (coupled with the risks of revealing you are out by the act of reloading) he simply engaged the slide release and pretended the pistol still had rounds in the magazine - it's a good job the other officers in the pick ups caught up in time.

We have a sergeant from that part of the world working in our force - he used to serve as an officer in S.Africa. I once asked him how he liked working for the British Police Service and how it differed from where he used to work.

He replied: "I love working here. This is the best police service in the world - it's so professional, you do things properly. Back in South Africa, there wasn't any of this "needing a warrant" business, we would just chuck a grenade through the window and be done with it!" ... and I thought he was joking :P

Considering how dangerous it is in many parts of RSA, I think I'd want to chuck a grenade in first prior to a raid!
