Complaints against officers

Evening all

 

I am currently in the process of being medically retired from PSNI due to chronic PTSD after 28 1/2 yrs service.

My question is when retired and receiving my pension & medical pension can you take another job in civvy street once I am well enough to do so in the future?

 

If so does my medical pension stop as i would be receiving an income.

This will be in quite a few years if at all but i just want to make some sort of plans for the future if I can get my life back together.

I don't know if it varies from force to force so a reply from one may not ring true for another.

 

I actually have two ex coleagues who left on a pension following work related stress and both went back to work after a period of convalecence and still do today. Working was a form of Occupational Therapy to them.

 

I think where they may have problems would be if an officer left with say an injury which incapacitated him for work in the Police Service, then took a job which involved heavy physical work. Especially if the person involved used this 'injury' as an excuse to leave and receive a pension.

I would check to see what level pension you get too. I believe there is a rate for not being fit to be a police officer and a higher rate for not being fit for any work whatsoever.

You need to see if you're gettIng the higher rate, and if it can be reduced if you do indeed become fit.

Contact your fed, they should advise.

A colleague of mine was retired medically from the Force due to the untimely death of his wife which affected him mentally. 

 

He was recalled to the Force about 7 years later.  When he indicated he would rather not come back, they effectively told him that was fine. However, they would cease paying his pension if that was the case!  He returned to the Police after having had a medical which ruled him fit to return.  I also know this happened in the Met a number of years ago.

 

A medical pension does not mean you are over the finishing line by any means.  I do not believe that you would be recalled after 25 years pensionable service, but can't be bothered to look it up! (It IS Christmas after all!!)

There is nothing to stop you working whilst in receipt of a sick pension if you are capable of fulfilling the new role and it doesn't involve anything that infers you might be fit enough to be able to return to the original job.

Interesting subject I have complex type 2 PTSD and suffer from 'extreme'tinnitus linked to vertigo.I am due back at work next week after a fairly lengthy time on the sick with Vertigo.So goodness knows what I can expect.I have nearly 28 years service.I need to have a think as I have had enough of dealing with the 'lower orders' in society.Whilst off I have rediscovered that most people are lovely most of the time.The thought of running round after our client base,at the moment fills me with dread and nausea.

Interesting subject I have complex type 2 PTSD and suffer from 'extreme'tinnitus linked to vertigo.I am due back at work next week after a fairly lengthy time on the sick with Vertigo.So goodness knows what I can expect.I have nearly 28 years service.I need to have a think as I have had enough of dealing with the 'lower orders' in society.Whilst off I have rediscovered that most people are lovely most of the time.The thought of running round after our client base,at the moment fills me with dread and nausea.

 

PTSD is horrible and my therapist is working through the trauma's I experienced while on duty.

He has identified 6 major trauma's and after 7 months of weekly sessions we are still trying to sort the first one.

 

I knew Northern Ireland was bad when i joined but the things i have seen and experienced over the years has ruined my life.

 

Good luck going back to work, i couldn't get through the doors tbh and good luck for the future.

To be retired on the grounds of ill health from the police it must be shown that you are disabled and that the disability is permanent. That disability, in turn, must prevent the police from deploying you AS A POLICE OFFICER.

Providing any new job does not undermine the diagnosis that saw you retired there should be no issue.

So, if having been diagnosed with PTSD you went to work as a green keeper at a golf club, for example, there would be no problem. If you were to join the army and see active service then things may be somewhat different! Two extreme examples, but they illustrate the point.

Are you having EMDR treatment which has worked for me.I am on appointment 25 next week of a 25 appointment programme.I am on a very strong dose of amitrptaline on a night.Things have been better gut I have found myself sleepwalking again and screaming and shouting again in my sleep.Combined with vertigo and tinnitus which means even more meds.Having been off work for 7 weeks I am happy and content to be a house hubby and Dad.Work looms on Monday!!

I have had 4 serious attempts on my life over the years and many other assaults S18 S20 and 47.Its s**t and I would happily wind the clock back and remained a welder if I had known where would be today.

Dont join the police.

I am having CTB Therapy sessions every week. They can prove to be really emotional and painful to get through and i am drained afterwards.

I am on Sertraline, Propranolol and Diazepam to try and reduce the intrusive thoughts and feelings i get daily.

 

Yea, your right mate, don't join the police !!

Thanks mate keep your pecker up.Monday should be OK we will see.Had my meds its time to sleep then after an hour I will rise and shout 'cocksucker' in every room of the house again and then dream being executed.... You have got to love PTSD and bosses who have not arrested 50 people !!!
