After several years of hearing and seeing how people's health and personal problems are generally disclosed to others and now having had experienced my own confidential info being shared and talked about, I want to take action and try change this culture and lack of respect for privacy.

Please share your experiences of this.

For example fell pregnant and had to disclose this info for health and safety reasons. Not having shares this info with anyone else or having even got to the 3 month period. Having made it clear she didn't want people know yet, she then found people coming up to her to congratulate her. Unfortunately she had immediately miscarried upon informing her supervisor.

I myself have sat at supergiants desks in a large office and heard them openly talking about why a member of staff was off and how she had asked for the reason not to be disclosed to others.

I have several other examples of this and it seems to be really prevalent.

Not just the police I had a juvenile sex offender allocated to myself who had been deemed to make enough progress to go back to mainstream education.Only the head, year leader and form teacher were supposed to know.

By the end of day one all the adult staff new about him including details.He got beaten up the next morning by other pupils.He had to go to a specialist placement at 3K per week cost to the tax payer 20 miles from home.He failed his gcses as this placement were behavioural focussed only.

For 18 months I endured sitting next to another PC who told anyone who was anyone my business especially the boss.

The hospital rang me about some tests I had taken and i forgot to walk to a private area.

The next thing I was in the bosses office being quizzed about my health.My colleague had put two and two together as i had also been dieting and figured out at worst I was end stage HIV or at best cancer riddled.

People gossip end of tell folk nothing.

Best thing about my hobby is that you learn how to keep secrets.

I can relate to that Emsess , I had a boss email my medical history to every DI on the OCU ( mailing list) to justify a posting decision , I had calls from some saying I should put a grievence in. I have seen personal medical information left on photocopiers as well.

I also refused to attend a case conference, as did my line manager re my health issues as it was requested by the same boss who had no line manager responsibility for me and my health issues were none of his business, he sat there alone with the head of HR.

We also had a daily management meeting where sickness was discussed and peoples personal information and conditions disclosed, that thankfully was stopped.

I found myself called to occupational health dept for a medical - I was nearing 30 yrs service (was at Sgt rank) but had no immediate health problems and no fitness issues had been mentioned by anyone. While at the medical I just happened to see my Inspectors name and personal mobile number written on a piece of paper in my file. When I challenged why the Inspectors details were present in the file people got very red faces, declined to answer but I was later told the Insp had referred me for the medical. I asked the Insp why only to be told that I was obviously suffering from stress! The Inspector then let the shift know this was her opinion. What was the real reason - I had told my Inspector that they were foolish to contemplate a relationship with a probationer pc on the shift and that if they did I wouldnt be allowing the pc any special favours! It will come as no surprise that one of us moved stations in the next few months. Did anyone of higher rank than Insp give a monkeys - of course not.
