Do retired UK Police Officers carry some form of Photo-ID with them that indicates what they are... Retired Officers. I understand that retired US Police Officer are allowed to carry some form of 'Retired Police ID' with them, as they work on the prinicple that...'Once a Cop, always a Cop, even when retired.

The short answer is no.

There have been many suggestions that we should have such a recognition of our service but they have fallen on deaf ears.

The measure of how valued former police officers are, comes home to roost when you try to seek other employment. It isn't easy - most of us are 50 plus when we retire - never an easy age in today's job market. As for I/D cards for retired officers ? Not sure what purpose they would serve.

The answer to your question is, Yes, we can apply for and carry a Retired Police Officer ID card. It is exactly the same as your Warrent card only with a different coloured band. I have mine and carry it at all times. I retired just over 2 years ago and applied upon leaving.

Oh yes, make the application through your HR Dept. Its easier to do just prior to retirement as they can use your current Warrant card picture. It is exactly the same as my old Warrant card with a green band - i retired from Essex Police

What are your reasons into carrying such a card, I can't see that it would prove that beneficial?

I originally obtained my card as i was quite active on the social scene and I also kept contact with ex colleagues. So by having a retired police officers ID card meant that i could attend any police station in Essex, show my card and be allowed inside. Obviously if i had a reason for being there. I would then, not need to have an 'Escort' following me round everywhere.

Personally, I am happy to use my passport or driving licence as ID, I am happy to travel anonomously on the train and pay my fare! My Warrant Card went in the post back to Blair, maybe I will be receiving his soon!

I would. Would have come in very handy when I was visiting the USA.

It would certainly be a good thing if you are in/visit North America. Its a real brotherhood here. Officers will be very helpful  to a fellow officer, retd or not.

WMP have a Retired Officers ID card and as stated earlier in the thread, it was introduced to allow old sweats to access the station for their NARPO meetings in the bar.

Now that there are no bars left in any operational station in the West Mids, the need for retired officers to have access to the station has gone, so the ID card (which is very similar in design to a warrant card) will be phased out.

Anyway, who needs to be supplied with an ID card when they've got that smug "I've got my commutation and I'm enjoying it" look on their face? Wink

Awaits comment from Pen!
