Any volunteers on here? What do you do?

Obviously there's going to be a few Special Constables on here... but other than that (as they have their own forum section!)...

It would be interesting to know what other voluntary roles people have got or have previously held - in any organisation, not just policing.

I've volunteered in a charity shop previously, but nothing at the moment. Thinking about volunteering again, but not sure what to do.

Volunteered at;

  • The charity Mind, was interesting, taking calls from people in need sure is a humbling experience.
  • Volunteered on a forum as a mod for many years - great experience!
  • Volunteered to help deliver food to the homeless, enjoyed it alot

I would love to do some more voluntary work but not sure what!

Before Police I used to volunteer at an animal sanctuary. This ranged from geese, parrots and goats to owls, pigs and injured foxes and squirrels. If ever you thought you've experienced the worst smell in the world, try holding and smelling a newborn fox ! Ghastly.

I did that for quite a while, as well as organising memberships and other volunteers. However, like most organisations with variety of different personalities and passions for the same topic of interest, come the priggish few who spoil the enjoyment for everyone whilst vying for the shiniest trophy and the ultimate accolade of being 'Correct'. The petty squabbling in these places is rife:

1) "No no. *I* had a hedgehog for 2 years and you shouldn't Bath it like that"
2) "Well I've had an African Pygmy for 4 years and I know how to Bath one thanks. Oh and stop feeding it cat food it's not good for them. Meal worms is the best"
1) "Well I fed my Sonic cat food for the whole time and he was fine"
2) "Yes but now he's dead"
1) "Are YOU suggesting that *I* killed Sonic. Well I've Googled it and..."

3) "Guys, guys, look... I have a degree in biology and..."

It was quite humourous at first, but rapidly got bored with the chest puffs and the weighing of each others balls - especially when it continued when out socialising - so I got them in order and left. I did suggest to the person running the charity that they send their volunteers for regular blood pressure checks but I'm not sure that was in the budget.

Then I joined the Police - which suffers the same plight and is one of THE most two-faced back-stabbing places I've ever worked. The only difference is, at least with the animal sanctuary, they'd say it to your face rather than make snide remarks to other people behind your back, or whilst in social media conversations.

Cathedrals have loads of volunteering roles, from stewards, hosts, welcomers, guides bellringers, readers, chaplains etc. But at Chester they are about to start their first volunteer constable, albeit this is a senior special constabulary officer who is leaving his force and, with the support of Cheshire Constabulary, moving to the Cathedral. I am sure he will be a great help.

It is strange but all of our small constabularies have received requests from people wanting to join them as volunteers. Unfortunately, ordinarily it isn't a request we are set up to support. Our resources are limited and we can normally only train permanent staff. The exception really seems to be were we receive enquiries from former serving specials/police officers who have not left under a cloud.

I'm currently a volunteer for St John Ambulance, and have been for three years.  It's honestly been one of the best things I've ever done!

Although I joined as a first aider, at the minute I'm an advanced first aider, cycle responder, and communications member, so I've had some quite varied experiences at some great events.

Whilst the police has always been my main volunteer role, as a Special and as a volunteer,I have helped with guides and rainbows and do a few bits for the local hospice when I can

I help people with mental health and addiction engage with services through creative arts and display their work in an exhibition. I also train cathedral front facing staff in conflict management and breakaway self-defence techniques.

Other than being a Special, I've coached gymnastics voluntarily for a uni club. I'd love to join the Coastguard or RNLI when I go to the regulars but one thing at a time....

I've volunteered at Citizens Advice Bureau as an advisor in the past. I really enjoyed it and ended up getting a paid job there.
