mike88 + 257
Very professionally done, nice BJJ back mount from the one officer.
Standby + 2
Good team work from both the guys. He got his back pretty quick. Good control. I liked the open palm slaps. However once he had reached for the gun I felt he should have just choked him out. It would have taken less then 10 seconds to put the guys lights outs and go limp! I'm guessing this might not be allowed?

I agree though, he was justified in this case to choke I'm out. I think this is a very good example of the use of force by an appropriately trained officer, proof elements of BJJ is effective. Palm strikes appropriately used. Well done US Police, proof that not everyone needs to be shot
MerseyLLB 8,426
Just to show how social conditioning works... When the suspect was saying 'i can't breathe'...even though I was aware he had pulled and was reaching for a loaded gun...part of me was going 'well that doesn't look good'. Twisted logic but my instinct was 'shoot him, he's reaching!' even though the use of the choke probably saved this stupid criminals life.

Shooting him in this instance would have been near impossible without increasing the risk to the officers and the public unacceptably. Once that first officer took him down, firearms were off the table, he would never have been able to get off the subject and move to safety in time for shots to be fired by his back up. Chokes work, trouble is the occasionally go wrong, then they are the route of all evil for the authorities. The subject was certainly insistent on getting that gun, and I think in this case he was fortunate not to be justifiably shot. The US is such a different social animal.
