Fire Service sirens

Is it just me or do often fire service vehicles turn off their sirens a lot more frequently than other services? I mean, when they are responding down the road, any opportunity they go off and then re-start them shortly down the road, even if there is still traffic around. Is this a policy thing? Random question I know! I just noticed it when driving recently and found it a bit irritating as I couldn't take the action as early as I normally do for emergency vehicles...

Former Firefighter suffering from cancer sent vile note!

Karen Land is a former Firefighter who had to give up her role when she was diagnosed with cancer, she went back after initial treatment, but cancer came back. It is now stage 4 and the NHS can offer the mum of two any further treatment, however, she can go to Germany for immunotherapy but that will cost £30K. She set up a Just Giving page but a card was hand delivered to her house with a vile message written inside. https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/news/local-news/fundraising-former-firefighter-cancer-sent-2433530

Having done 5 years service in the police in various roles I have just seen my local fire service are recruiting firefighters. Other than the pay drop (28k top rate) as opposed to (36K top rate PC) I am seriously considering it for the following reasons; Long commutes into 'town' to police, 7 on 3 off shift pattern a common theme and likely to stay, off late most days, call after call, high risk of being assaulted and prosecuted for doing the job. Weirdly enough I've always wanted to do that job but I joined the police instead as at the time there was virtually zero to none recruitment in the fire service. Would anyone advise me against the move? Sent from my iPhone us…

A lollipop man has been suspended after claims he stopped a fire engine on its way to a 999 call. An eyewitness said firefighters had to physically remove the man from a crossing outside a school in Luton, as he continued to help children cross. The fire engine was on its way to an out of control bonfire on St Ethelbert Avenue, at about 15:30 BST on 13 April. Luton Borough Council said it has requested CCTV footage from the fire service. Jacqui Brittain said she saw the fire engine coming down her road, with its lights on, from her bedroom window. 'Like a car crash' She said he continued to help one group of children from William Austin Junior School cross the…

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service saw an increase in absence between July and September last year MORE firefighters are taking time off sick – and hundreds of days are being lost due to anxiety and depression, says Nottinghamshire’s assistant chief fire officer. Craig Parkin said he was concerned about the trend and believed pressures caused by public-sector cuts were “creating anxiety”. Absence across the fire service rose by more than 75 days, excluding retained staff, on the previous quarter. From July 1 2014 to September 30 last year, 967 days were lost to long-term sickness – 28 days or more. And 68.7 per cent of firefighter absences were classed…

Recruitment 1 2

Thought I'd start this thread for recruitment in the future or current for Wholetime Firefighters in the UK. Merseyside just recruited for a very short period of time with notice. London Fire Brigade are gearing up for some future recruitment campaigns in the new year, however its rumored post code restricted to those living in London only. West Midlands FRS hinted at possible recruitment a few months ago but nothing since. Lancashire have 30 vacancies but whether they fill them or not is something else. My local FRS Humberside are not looking to recruit for 10+ years, probably privatised or fully retained by then anyway. Just a little bit of re…

Okay so I'm after some advice here. My girlfriends next door neighbour (semi detached house) has an open fire. Now every time they ligjt their Fire it fills the bedrooms in my girlfriends with smoke. We first told them about this last winter and assumed they had sorted it. Well they haven't and they have started lighting it again due to them not having central heating. Last week it was really bad and we told them and even had them in the house looking how bad it was. They then went back in to their house and didn't put it out which resulted in myself and the missus trying too sleep in a smoke filled room and then finally giving up and moving in the spare room due to us bo…
