A lorry driver has been arrested on suspicion of people smuggling offences following a National Crime Agency-led operation in Kent. An HGV was stopped by NCA officers, supported by police colleagues, just outside the port of Dover at around 1.30pm today (1 October), as part of an ongoing investigation into organised immigration crime. In the rear of the trailer officers found four adult male migrants, two Bangladeshis, one Indian and one Egyptian. They were all suspected of having been in the UK illegally and have been handed to the immigration authorities to be dealt with. The lorry was booked to sail on a ferry to Calais later today. A new joint unit of UK and French law enforcement officers working together to tackle organised immigration crime has been involved in the arrest of almost 100 suspected people smugglers in France since it started work two months ago. The Joint Intelligence Cell, which became operational on 21 July, has also played a part in stopping around 500 migrants from making the crossing in small boats. UK officers working in the JIC come from the National Crime Agency and Immigration Enforcement, working as part of Project Invigor, the UK immigration crime taskforce. Nearly 300 fugitives have been arrested in the UK during lockdown including an alleged child sex abuser, a rapist and a modern slavery and human trafficking (MSHT) money-man. Between 8 April and 26 June, 297 wanted fugitives were arrested in the UK on European Arrest Warrants after a crackdown led by the National Crime Agency. The pandemic put unprecedented pressure on police forces’ resources. The suspected ringleader of a drug dealing operation and three others have been arrested in West London as part of an investigation linked to Operation Venetic. Officers from the Organised Crime Partnership (OCP), a joint NCA and Metropolitan Police Service unit, arrested the four in dawn raids this morning on suspicion of conspiring to supply class A drugs. The 34-year-old man believed to be the head of the organised crime group was detained at his flat on North End Road in Hammersmith. A seventh suspected member of an organised crime group in Merseyside has been arrested as part of an investigation into drug trafficking and money laundering. The 55-year-old man was apprehended at an address in Warrington this morning (Tuesday) by officers from the National Crime Agency, supported by the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit. He was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply and import controlled drugs, conspiracy to launder money, and participating in the activities of an organised crime group. Police Scotland has also announced plans to establish a "centre of excellence" for cyber crimes, with at least 150 specialist staff. Its focus will be on offences such as child sexual abuse, fraud, and the sharing of indecent images.
