Watch: Documentary 'The Force: Manchester' goes on patrol with GMP

A documentary is aiming to reveal the highs and lows of life on the beat for police in Greater Manchester.

Makers of Sky 1’s 'The Force: Manchester' say the show will offer an exclusive look behind the scenes of Greater Manchester Police - the country’s second largest police force.

The 20-part series follows police officers and front line staff responding to crimes around the clock as they try to keep the region’s 2.7 million people safe.

Deputy Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said the programme offered a vital insight in the force’s work in a time of austerity and cuts to the service.

He said: “We offered unprecedented access to every area of our work, showing the relentless demand and vastly complex nature of policing in 2015.

“Everyday our officers and staff work hard to keep the people of Greater Manchester safe but with fewer officers and further reductions planned we have to work closer with partner agencies and local people.

“I hope that the insight provided by The Force: Manchester will show how crucial this support is for us and the future of Greater Manchester.”

The documentary is being broadcast after a spate of fatal shootings and stabbings across Greater Manchester in the past two months, although the filming is unlikely to cover any of the incidents.

Each episode will show police dealing with a variety of calls including domestic disputes, burglaries, antisocial behaviour and drink driving.

Matt Holden, series editor at Shine TV, the production company behind the show, said: “The Force: Manchester is fast-moving series with unparalleled access to one of Britain’s busiest, and most important, police forces.

“Viewers will get an intimate and honest understanding of modern policing and life on the beat as officers react to a huge range of emergency calls for help.”

Greater Manchester Police, made up of 6700 officers, receive 500,000 emergency 999 calls a year and make 200 arrests a day.

Earlier this year the BBC screened a documentary following the team of Manchester sex crime detectives who helped cage DJ Ray Teret.

The Force will air at 10pm, Wednesday on Sky 1.

Thought this will be of great interest to some people on here, starts tonight!

With the new forum system, there doesn't seem to be a place to post general TV stuff like this. I believe a new subforum will be created soon though.

I enjoyed it. It tailed off towards the end I think I spent more of the last 10 minutes checking Twitter on my phone than paying attention but I'll keep the Sky+ recording

It was quite tame, but it was realistic, which is what GMP have promoted it as. They want to show what it's really like, and very often it is the same old domestics with the same old couples, and sometimes people do get lucky and get away with it. And sometimes, like the first job, you get a good result!

Haven't watched it yet.  Is it anything like britcops was? overdramatized, etc.
