jamieMET + 121
Any computer experts on here? My current laptop is getting on a bit now. Its a Samsung R510. I'm currently after a Ultrabook to replace it with. Reason being I want something slim, smart and powerful to replace it with. I tried an Apple Air for a few days but I just cant get on with their OS on a computer. My pal has a Lenovo U330, and told me the U430 would be great for what I wanted. John Lewis were selling a great spec i7 one but while I was deciding its sold out and gone Minimum desired Spec as follows: Windows 8.1 Intel Gen 4 i7 2.0+ Ghz 8GB RAM SSD would be great or alternative Silver/grey chassis like the Air Touchscreen? Budget Around £800-900 I have seen the Samsung but the spec I likes was £1.2k I have also seen the HP ENVY series. Not sure what they are like though (linked £849) http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=ECC_BUNDLE_4749705&opt=&sel=PCNB Thanks in advance guys
pete76 + 77
Ever considered trying a Mac mate? i went from PC to mac and I'll never go back (after my PC dies). for your budget you could get a 13" macbook. in fact you get get loads here http://www.reviewlaptops.co.uk/product/list.do?modelname=Apple%20MacBook%20Air They have I5's but in a Mac they are just as good as OSX uses less resources and it is made for the machine. Also most machines come with 8Gb as standard now. Those say 4 but they are just examples Otherwise for Windows. I would go for that Envy it's beefy and on viewing looks like it has a Fusion drive so 8GB which is buffers to be as fast as a SSD but 1TB for storage. Such drives are about £85 right now I was looking at one yesterday. All that said I have a Desktop PC (which I only have as it cost me £900 5 weeks ago) and that's 12GB Ram and 4GB Graphics with a 1TB drive for storage and 240GB SSD for Windows. It has a I7 4770 Quad and I don't see any difference in every day performance to my Mac which is i5 4250 Quad and 8GB ram 1TB drive. I use the Mac more day to day and will not buy a windows PC again. If you want gaming get windows. If you want virus free stability get a mac. Edited November 11, 2014 by Pete76

I took it back to the Apple show 2 days later and returned it. Even thought I have iPads and iPhones, their computer OS just baffles me. I'm considering the HP ENVY I linked, Just only having a HP Printer I'm not sure if it was any good as a brand, or if there was a better alternative someone else knew about that was better spec'd. I do no Lenovo have a current promotion to get your VAT back, so that's what making me hold off buying the HP also I guess. pete76 + 77
To be honest mate with a PC dosen't matter all made in the same factory. Most machines are made by HP - HP own Packard Bell who own Acer etc.. Mac's are fairly easy the only difference is There is an app store for most things. (Just like the Iphone) You only single click with a Mac ( but can change it) You scroll the other way to a PC (again changeable) Mac's don't have to restart every 10 seconds when they get a 1kb update. Macs update and that's it - carry on. I've hit my power button once so far in 3 weeks and always sleep it when not in use. You get the jist. Getting the VAT back is a good idea and on that Envy machine would be £169.80 for example. But if the Lenovo is more than the Envy after rebate it might be worth it? Lenovo is owned by Motorola these days. Edited November 11, 2014 by Pete76

Snap it up then mate because you are getting more than the VAT as that's £149. So double bargain! I see the one you mean. Good deal. PC World have ones with that rebate also Edited November 11, 2014 by Pete76
pete76 + 77
Oh my god how stupid. Claim the VAT back when you purchase this laptop. To claim visit www.lenovo-offers.com/vatback between 21 and 51 days after purchase. Offer ends 05/12/2014. Ts&Cs apply. You only have 24 days as of now so if you don't buy it by the weekend you won't be able to claim it back anyway This one looks Decent and has the rebate. (£129) so £570 http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/lenovo-flex-2-15-6-convertible-touchscreen-laptop-10022694-pdt.html Edited November 11, 2014 by Pete76

HP give quite generous police discounts if you go via MetOffers. With the VAT rebate, why don't you get a Yoga 2 Pro? You'll be the coolest copper in town. miffy + 74
Please don't get a HP. After owning a brand new Hp Envy for less than week - £800 it died on its own update. Previous HP laptop run super hot and very expensive to repair. Best bet is to either get a Dell or a Lenovo. Though I got a Mac Pro and Im so glad I got this. No software glitches, perfect screen and smooth performance. Wouldn't go back to a Windows laptop ever.
pete76 + 77
It took me seconds to learn how to use it first thing I did was reverse the scrolling so when you scroll down that's what it does and not the " natural" option, which to me seems the wrong way round anyway.  I just sleep mine when not in use. it never complains or wakes up on it's own. I love my Mac even if it is only the base model. (I bought 2)  As you can see I am still a PC user also just not as much as the Mac  http://prntscr.com/55cijd     Edited November 11, 2014 by Pete76
jamieMET + 121
I couldnt even work out how to move files around. Maybe I was just being silly. Ideally I'd rather stick with Windows, I co own a forum and internet site and it baffles me enough let alone having to manage it on a mac :(
