Collar Numbers

Recommended Posts

Hi,

just wondered if there was a reason Essex Police have 5 digit collar numbers and they all start with a 7?

Thanks

I don't know Essex police, but, could it be possibly straying in to operational information? At the very least, whilst reasons and/or indicators might be publicly available we try not to help things along in that manner.

How on earth can a collar number be operational information?

I think it might just be a case of they are the numbers they have gotten up to collar number wise.

I'm pretty sure that once a constable retires/resigns from service, their collar number can't be used for a certain number of years. (As told to me at training school) So they might not have lower numbers available at the moment, or just for convenience sake they're sticking to starting with 7.

I know in Lancs Specials, their first number starts differently to the regs as do PCSOS.

Not sure about essex but the 5 digits might just be random, or it might be sequential for systems needing 5 digits (??). As for starting with a 7 probably identifys them as PCs ect, specials may have a different number? Every force is unique as long as they've got collar numbers i don't think it matters what/why they have certain numbers :P

Because.

No reason other than that.

Once they reach 79999 they'll no doubt go onto 8xxxx

In Essex, back in the day your number essentially typed you. Male officers started at one and then escalated up to the force establishment. Female officers were four figures and always started with 3. Once you had risen to the dizzy heights of Supt you were given a number beginning with 4. Rightly or wrongly the PC brigade decided your number shouldn't type you so as of about 10-12 years ago all new collar numbers began with 7. The rest will be phased out until everyone is a 7. Hope that helps.
