MerseyLLB 8,426
Not a criticism...but if you threaten to spray someone three times and they continue to attack you the time for tac comms has probably passed. I dont know if it's politically correct to say it but CS was deserved there, i couldn't see if it was actually deployed or not. When it comes to dynamic situations like this I think the US system of 'ask, tell, make' fits the criteria rather than our UK system of ask, tell, ask, get attacked, ask, plead, ask again and then get derided by PSD and IPCC six to twelve months later. Good to see a good turn out for the assistance call but to those not in the job this video shows how very long even 3 minutes is.
mike88 + 257
This is why CS is probably more effective than PAVA. With PAVA you have to be so accurate to the eyes it'd be practically useless in this situation.
Fedster + 1,307
The Sun have just published a story about this incident. https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/1569152/shocking-video-shows-gang-of-young-men-attack-police-officers-in-east-london-after-they-pull-over-a-car/ They have included a comment made about the video by a reddit user; Quote British police officers making American police officers look unprofessional, as usual – after 5 minutes of scuffle, the police STILL warns the guy “One more step and I will spray you”. Nobody got seriously hurt that day.” How are the making American Officers look unprofessional? I don't get it.

I don't get it. Didn't look professional to me, officers looked brave, tenacious but at times desperate. And the fact on one was seriously hurt was more due to luck. I PAVAED a bloke on Xmas day and didn't get any in his eyes. He took most in his mouth and on his face. It still knocked the fight out of him and made him very uncomfortable for 25-30 mins. Whilst it doesn't affect your airways in the same way as Cs a spray in your direction will still leave you coughing and irritated.

Not used CS in years, just didn't see the point as you end up closing and putting hands on (and most likely still scrapping as it wasn't that effective!) and then find yourself suffering the effects. SimonT + 1,194
I have certainly been guilty of the repeated warning and no action. Not in the same situation. i think it's because if you spray you are pretty much committed and with so few of us available it's overwhelmingly better to get someone to calm down and naff off. But if it's multiple hostile closing in them pava is great for spraying them down. it's quite accurate and you can spray for a while before running out. CS is probably one of the reasons why the officer had to keep threatening to spray rather than doing it straight away, he would most likely of been thinking abut incapacitating himself more than anything. Trust me with PAVA you do not have to be accurate to they eyes as long as you hit the face it will have an affect, I would argue PAVA in this scenario would have been much more effective. Nonetheless I have to say both officers acted in much more professional manner than what I would have in that situation, I take my hat off to them. They were restrained used their Tac Comms and did not get carried away with the situation. Ultimatley they did not let themselves get hurt badly and they kept hold of their prisoners until their backup arrived. I do think those forces who still use CS are letting their officers down, PAVA is a great tool and it works, which the same can't be said for CS.
