This is an old incident and body cam footage, but as its been posted on Social Media by the force and this is a busier forum, I'm going to post it here.  Its been out for a couple of weeks but I have had a quick look and cant see it so thought I would post.  If its already on here then please feel free to close.

Its shocking just how easy it can go wrong and its very lucky he is still alive.

Every single officer involved in that incident performed fantastically in my eyes.

Cool carm and collected it would appear. The injured officer did extremely well. Continued to cover the door with taser even when laying on the ground. Stayed calm, assisted with his own treatment and advised other officers.

It can all go wrong so quickly and sometimes no matter how much prior planning you will never prevent it. Such a professional response from the injured officer and his colleagues in no doubt contributed greatly to the officer surviving this incident.

Well done!

This should be compulsory viewing for all Police Inspectors, who have the responsibility for deciding whether to deploy armed or unarmed officers to any incident where edged weapons are reported. All too often in our force reports of such incidents are followed by the phrase "From the FIM. Area Taser trained officer to attend and assess, ensure you are wearing body armour". Unfortunately despite being a busy metropolitan force there can be only a single area/Divisional taser officer available.

This really angers me the criteria to deploy armed officers "is reason to suppose" not believe! Bosses seem more concerned with deployment figures than the safety of officers.

Anyway stepping off my soapbox, well done to all involved, hope the officer involved makes a full recovery.

Scary how quick that happened. I think it should be compulsory viewing for all officers in training too to show how sour things can turn so quickly.

Any idea on what happened to the offender or what the incident was about?

I can just second what Remmy says.

It seems we have to be lucky every time rather than risk a violent criminal facing suitably equipped officers.

I will deal with what I come across and need to but there's no shame in admitting I'd rather the chaps and chapesses with the equipment and training were being sent rather than my unarmed colleagues and I.

Why is it that in deciding where the 'collateral' falls it seems ever more that it has to be injured officers rather than injured criminals?

Major kudos to this officer and I hope this incident results insome recognition for him and his team.

From reading the little bit of story that goes with the video on Facebook they were/have been nominated for bravery awards.  We watch a lot of clips in OST to re-inforce the points made during the training, especially around safety aspects.

I also echo other officers about deployment of units and how appropriate that may (or not) be.

This is something that has bothered me since soon after the introduction of STOs... We used to always send firearms officers to these jobs on an SFI and now we send a Taser officer who has little in the way of contingencies if the device is unsuccessful... I just dont feel it's fair to put our officers in that sort of situation. That said, I'm not an OPS1 and have never performed that role, and I've not done my TFC courses yet..!

It doesn't matter if you have done the course or not "Reason to suppose" not believe and your backside is covered as a boss (although I'm sure that isn't the primary concern for the majority of out leaders :P).

I like to keep things simple so quick scenario a single report stating a male is walking down a residential street with a sword in his hand, caller refuses details and no other methods of gathering information/intelligence.

Should you deploy or not or more importantly has the criteria to deploy armed officers been met?

Of course it has!!!

Could you suppose that officers deployed to investigate this incident may have to deal with a person  "who is armed or otherwise so dangerous". Any reasonable person would say yes, it really doesn't matter if you believe it's likely just that it's possible.

From that moment on, a boss TFC/SFC passes almost all responsibility to the individual firearms officer should force be used. However if they decide to deploy unarmed officers and it results in a situation where they are killed or seriously injured or a they cannot stop such a thing happening to a member of public once they arrive, well that boss may have several uncomfortable days in the box explaining thier decision making or ultimately find themselves facing criminal charges.

It really is that simple and something in my opinion the federation should be questioning on a daily basis.

Not seen or heard of this incident before but I don't mind admitting I'm alarmed by it, the officer had zero time to react.

Does anybody on here know if the officer is fully recovered and was he able to return to work? Hope that scumbag behind the door with the sword got a suitable sentence. Truly shocking.

Best wishes to the officer.

Saw this video a few weeks ago, it made my stomach do some very uncomfortable back flips.  Imagine telling your colleague to stand on your leg because you know you're bleeding out.  Christ on a bike.
