Car MOT

Recommended Posts

Bobbie

Afternoon folks,

My friends buying a car at the weekend but it doesn't currently have a in date MOT, thus no insurance or road tax.

He will be picking it up and get it into a MOT test centre the day he picks it up, is he covered to drive it to the test centre for its MOT As long as it's booked in?

It can be driven to a prearranged MOT appointment without tax, but it does need to be insured before it goes on the road - no exceptions there.

The person concerned has fully comp on there other car so can drive third party on others.

Would this cover him to driver it to the test centre?

They need to ensure that their other insurer covers them to drive vehicles which they also own, and which aren't covered by another insurance policy. The drive other vehicles cover on many policies won't be sufficient for these circumstances.

Unlikely, Most DOV / DOC (Drive other Vehicles / Cars) 3rd party extensions usually have a clause along the lines of " so long as the vehicle is not owned by the policy holder) so if you friend is buying the car then they are the owner it will not extend the cover and they need to obtain such cover even just for a day cover

The MOT/tax status will not prevent them getting insurance, so they just need to get insurance and provided they are driving to/from a pre-arranged MOT then everything is ok.

DOC will not cover them to drive the vehicle as it will be owned by them. Most DOC's also state the vehicle must have its own policy in place.

Not have a valid MOT will not stop you from insuring the car, so just take out a policy before you drive off.

Wouldn't it be fair to say some policies require the other veh to be covered rather than met, as there are so many policies out here .  It's just a condition that some apply along with other optional conditions.

.But insurance does take us off the OP a tad!
