GMP X Cars

Recommended Posts

I've been thoroughly enjoying watching episodes of X cars from around 1997 on youtube, such as this:

Quite incredible how different car crime is now, who remembers ringing? I haven't heard that term for years! The numbers of cars being stolen in Manchester at that time are utterly staggering. I guess modern immobilisers have slowly killed off kids nicking cars for a laugh.

Love the patrol cars, Cavalier SRIs, Escort and Sierra Cosworths. Does any force drive anything remotely like that now?

Proper cars! Them were the days. I've occasionally seen and met officers who were on X-Cars, and the later Car Wars series, and I get a bit star struck :D :D

The TVIU (modern day equivalent unit) rock up to jobs in S3s, R32, 135is, 330i and 330ds, and the odd Subaru mostly now.

Our car crime unit in my force use some rather tasty unmarked cars. If I told you what they were it would give the game away but they're incredibly quick and they bloomin know how to drive them!

They're claim to fame (amongst themselves mostly) was that they've not lost a pursuit. They've aborted plenty but, at the last time I spoke to them, nobody had out-run them.

Do the Subarus still have those two tone sirens? I remember watching a similar series maybe 5 years ago with them!

That was Car Wars I think! Unfortunately I think they've ditched the retro sirens now :(

I did a shift in a loan carrier once that had them though, spent the journey to Grade 1 jobs wetting myself with laughter! :D

X cars was fantastic, especially when they were out in the Sapphire Cossies. The Sargent was like Mr. Bean

Cars Wars was my favorite, with Paul "Fletch" Fletcher (who no longer works on the TVCU crewe after writing off a VW Golf MK6 R).

There was something wonderfully oldy worldy about the Insp rocking up in a marked Rover 800.

Being able to drive pod van snd personal carrier would be very useful! (Though if need another D1/D on my licence ) for £2k I'd rather pay for my own course wether it be internal or by via external but verified police trainer, to be reponse trained, I know it's one of those pathetic "new specials shouldn't be response trained fif they're that new". (Do you know of paramedic response trained allows you to drive response on police ?)

ATM I'm putting around 45hrs/week in and I've been out on IRT with bobbies who aren't response trained and it's frustrating knowing your desperately needed but can't get there.

or the simple I'd like to know what we can and can't blue light too, as it's up not the driver too decide,

I think all emergency services have their own bue light training and it is not transferable.

It is for us, our DTS will research to see if they accept it rather than just a paperwork exercise though.

Confused what this has to do with X Cars, but in GMP, specials can't use their day job driving qualifications for response driving.

I know that the cars of old like on Xcars were heavily modified for police use, I mean like engine remaps and stuff.

Does anyone know if that's still the case for the BMW 3, 5 and X5's?
