So has anyone else taken the plunge and upgraded to Sky Q today?

I particularly like the fact that I can have remote boxes that don't need a satellite, or antenna connection!

I have been looking at it, but I'm concerned about how much extra it'll cost. They say an extra £12 per month for existing customers but I'm not sure if that's per box as we have multi room with 3 boxes so it could turn out expensive

If you already have Multi-room you are probably only looking at £2 a month more!

I really really want to go for it but the cost makes me really uncomfortable. As I won't take broadband/movies/sport out I'd be liable to the £249 upfront cost and then a £50 installation fee. Then it's an additional £22 on top of what I already pay.

In the words of Dragons Den, I'm out. But I really want the features it offers!!

Really? Just £2 a month more?

I wanted to phone up Sky and inquire last night but it almost ended as a domestic as she said all I want is the latest gadgets (she's right though  )

Yup! Sky have also changed the support model for Sky Q as well! If your Sky Q hardware develops any faults while you are under a subscription, there are no longer any repair / call out charges, I guess this was an attempt to kill of one of Virgin Media's sales tactics.

Being an early adopter, I have had to pay £248 up front to Sky, to cover installation fee's etc, but for that price I have got

  • 1 x Sky Q Silver (2TB mega super dooper central box thing, with 12 tuners or something mad like that!)
  • 2 x Sky Q mini (the wireless / Ethernet receivers from the Sky Q Silver)

Once Sky start broadcasting 4K content it means I am fully 4K ready for my main TV! :D

What i was told on the phone was if you have Sky Family, with movies, and 2 x multi-screen you are paying about £75 a month, with Sky Q silver (taking the box costs out of consideration here) that would be £71 so you could tell Mrs @Rocket that you were saving money! (don't tell her i said that :o )

I always like to have the latest but I don't think this is going to work out any better for me.

I allready pay over £90 per month to Sky.  For that I have my phone through them along with my Broadband package, then I have the TV package which includes films, sport and family (I believe).  I don't have multi room as I live alone so the other TV's in the house are fed from the main box in the living room.  When I only had Sky+ I was able to change channels in any room with a magic eye and a sky remote but sionce I got SkyHD the magic eye's stopped working and I now have to use the Sky App on my phoneor tablet to change the channels via WiFi.  Not a huge problem just something new to get used to.

I think if I went for this new thing it's going to cost me a fair few quid for not much gain.

Hmm, just phoned up Sky for a chat about it. The £248 is a killer for me to get past the Mrs but because Sky multi-room will no longer be needed our monthly bill drops from £97 to £86 so over the 18 month contract period so it's only costing us an extra £60ish.

Upsides are being able to record 4 programmes and watch a 5th and stream to laptops etc.

Downsides is the Sky Q mini boxes don't have hard drives in them so it's the main box that does the recording and in our case recording the programmes for the other 2 boxes too. Also our current 2tb box is at 50% so I'm a bit concerned whether the Sky Q Silver box will have enough capacity as it also has a 2tb hard drive.

There is nothing wrong with wanting the latest gadgets... nothing at all!

I would love this feature as we struggle to get any aerial signal in the bedroom so a little Sky Q would avoid the need to run any cables through the house. Would also have one for the back room as well.

The price is the biggest issue for me, but hopefully if I give it 6 months, at some point, they may start wanting to upgrade the other customers who want to play a little hard to get and there may be some sort of discount. (That's the hope anyway).

Out of interest, do they take your Sky+HD box away from you once you upgrade?

I don't think so no? I'm sure they left us the last one when we had an upgrade.

That's an interesting point though as to cut the costs down I'm wondering if we can flog our 2tb and 1tb and old pre-hd sky box assuming it's allowed and Sky don't block them or something?

Yeah, just wondered whether that was an option to reduce costs. I had to send my Virgin media box back when I used to be with them, but never had a sky upgrade or cancellation.

Doesn't appear to be worth much though...

You own the old sky boxes so you can do anything you want with them, sky don't block them in my experience.

I have a couple of old Sky HD boxes that I have got here as spares because it was cheaper to do that than pay for a call out.

Well I got home and told Mrs @Rocket about my phone call to Sky and whilst she hasn't said yes she also hasn't said no which is a good sign :)

I've been doing research on Sky Q by people who have reviewed it and the remote control looks a nifty bit of kit as it apparently has the capability for voice control which Sky will activate at an unspecified time.

That makes it sound like they'll randomly switch it on without anyone knowing
