Has anyone got any experience of home wifi connections?  Stuff like the ability to adjust and set your heating remotely or remote home security cameras or maybe control of sockets and lighting.

There are a few companies out there and I am quite interested in the technology so do you know anything about it or have you had any experiences?

I have a Nest thermostat, and that's just awesome! It was included 'free' when I switched to an energy supplier, and it's actually saved me about £200-250 a year on average since it was installed!

I'd love to get one of those Nest/Hive things but living in a rented flat I don't think I'd be allowed. It's bad enough trying to get fibre installed in the building!!

The Ubiquiti project blogs are quite an interesting read @Cheetah, some of the things that people have come up with using Ubiquiti products are so clever and may cost a fraction of the cost of some other solutions. We use their cameras and wireless access points in my day job.

I dont see why not, it just replaced the old thermostat, it took the guy no more than 20 minutes to install at my parents, mine took a little longer but the savings have been very worth it! :)

I may ask the question then, the worst they can say is no!

In terms of WiFi / broadband connectivity, most of the devices I've seen need to be plugged into the router by cable. They then use RF or low energy Bluetooth to talk to the remote thermostats and control units.

A lot of these things work on p2p (peer to peer) so you don't need any special settings on your router to access the heating controls or cameras from the mobile network.

For CCTV, I've tried using an Ethernet cable to WiFi extender, back to WiFi on the router, but the WiFi extender needed rebooting once a week!

Power line seems more reliable, perhaps a power off/on once a month, but nothing beats an ehternet cable all the way!
