Phone Insurance

Recommended Posts

Sir Penguin

Hi All,

Just wondering who has phone insurance and if anyone can recommend any providers? Currently I'm paying £15 p/m on an iPhone 6 with £60 excess for a claim. The good thing about my current provider is that if I make a claim I will be given a replacement on the next working day. However I still believe it's quite expensive for phone insurance.

I have my phone insurance with my paid for bank account, I get the same cover as you mention above I believe, but for £3 more than your paying for just phone insurance I also get 3% cash back on my direct debits, break down cover, worldwide travel insurance and a few other bits!

My phone insurance from the bank is underwritten by Aviva.

I haven't had phone insurance for many years.

I've broken my phone and had to pay to get a repair - but it was still cheaper than what I would have paid with insurance.

The phone shop even loaned me a replacement 4G smartphone free of charge.

Guess it depends on how clumsy you are or how likely it is to get broken based on your environment (e.g. office job vs. police officer vs. tradespersons).

Whilst I fully believe in insurance, I weigh that up with the item. I think phone insurance can be expensive and unnecessary since some household policies cover them - not all, so will need checking.

Also I do wonder, if you're careful, if the cost outweighs the benefit, and don't forget there's likely to be an excess anyway. At the moment, personally speaking, I think phone insurance is oversold. But that's only my opinion.

I don't trust myself to take a chance without phone insurance too many mishaps over the years, including dropping one in the toilet whilst ever so slightly drunk

However I found insurance provided by mobile companies very expensive. Switched a couple of years ago to protectmybubble, now got a family policy covers 3 phones and an ipad at a very reasonable rate. You don't get a next day service but found the service very good when I made a recent claim.

Never much thought about insurance for my phone  till I read this thread to be honest , I must have had my razr v3i for about ten years now, got it a few months after they came out and it's still going strong. Mind you it's had three or four new batteries and another case, ha. I know it cost me two hundred pounds at the o2 shop but that included a Motorola leather cover for it,  I thought they were charging a bit much at the time, but the shop next door wanted another tenner  (my brother went with me to advise me, he said you will soon forget the price)the modern ones  are quite dear to buy now. Anyway just waiting for It to pack up then I can get another.:). Rich.

Phones of that era Ruch wont ever pack up! ;) the technology was more about reliability than extra features!

@Sir Penguin here are the details of my account -

Mobile Phone Insurance

Your policy covers your mobile phone for loss, theft, accidental damage and if your phone stops working

What you should know:

  • The policy covers unauthorised calls up to £2,500 (inc VAT) for monthly contracts and up to £100 (inc VAT) for pay as you go customers
  • Covers account holders’ phones only
  • 2 phones are covered if you have a joint account
  • The replacement value per phone is unlimited (excluding cosmetic embellishments with precious metals, stones or crystals)
  • There is a £75 excess.

So OK I am 'paying' £18 a month, but from the cash back alone from my direct debits I probably almost make this back, and thats before some of the other features!

If it were just the phone insurance I wanted I would look at the Reward Silver account at £12 a month with the cash back also!

I personally use NatWest, but I think most of the other banks have similar accounts, and with the other benefits can work out cheaper than stand alone insurance :)

I used to pay Carphone Warehouse an arm and a leg for mine but now I get it through Nationwide.  I pay a tenner a month for their account and last month I made a fiver in interest so it only really costs me £5... plus I get travel insurance, breakdown cover, blah blah blah the list goes on
