Police database systems

It would be nice to have a national system, generally police "local" systems don't talk to each other, the exception here is North Wales, Cheshire and MERPOL who use the same system. Interestingly GMP was offered the same system by MERPOL but decided to go solo and we all know how that ended up. The only systems which are national are PNC and PND, even intel submitted on local systems may not be disseminated until evaluated and rated.

27 forces have that system but there are only about 4 alliances of 2-4 forces that use it as a shared system.
There’s also Athena, which is shared by nine forces but all is not well in the workings of that system. Or at least it was still being heavily criticised up until a couple of years ago.

Do you think it will change in the future? Having lots of unconnected silos of data seems really inefficient for intelligence gathering and investigations.

Not in the immediate future no, but it would be a good thing to have for sure, the only issue will be legacy data migration, data integrity and training / upskilling of staff. Even after 9/11 the US still use over 26 different databases and several RMS and CAD type software with little interoperability.

Police can access intel from other forces by using the Police National Database. It's a bit clunky by simple enough, but most cops don't know its available to them.
