The former head of Cleveland's professional standards department who was accused of meddling in investigations involving friends will still face gross misconduct charges, a hearing panel has decided.

A panel hearing her case has decided to grant a three-month adjournment to allow the force more time to examine evidence.

Superintendent Bev Gill was accused of tipping off her friend Detective Inspector Simon Hurwood about allegations of a sexual nature against him.

He has since resigned after his behaviour towards more than 20 women came to light.

Supt Gill was also accused of unnecessarily getting involved in an investigation about a senior officer who lied about injuries he suffered at the hands of a love rival.

At a hearing last week Cleveland Police applied for an adjournment to assess new information that has come to light as a result of employment tribunal evidence.

Supt Gill’s counsel had objected to the adjournment, partly because her health has suffered as a result of the disciplinary process.

But at a hearing today (30 June), the panel agreed to grant it, saying it was in the public interest for the case to go ahead.

Panel chair Shamaila Qureshi said: “There is undoubtedly a high public interest in having these allegations tested.”

The force had said previously if the adjournment was not granted it would not be in a position to proceed and they would offer no evidence.

Last year the current civilian head of the force's PSD Christiana Emsley, was suspended pending an investigation. Superintendent Paul Waugh is currently temporary head of the department.

It's like a bad novel. What a waste of space the lot of them. If an organisation is that bad that it's own PSD needs another PSD to look after it, it must be bloody awful to work for.
