Are led strip lights legal to use in a van?

Recommended Posts

Ah342

I have recently purchased bog standard led strip lights. I am awaiting their arrival and am questioning the legality of this. They are going to be installed in the passenger and luggage area of a 9 seater people carrier. I am aware alternating red and blue flashing is illegal but what is legal? Thanks in advance and sorry for posting late.

Brilliant idea to buy the lights and then wonder at their legality!   However, it reds that you intend to use them INSIDE the vehicle so you can pretty much do as you please with them, remembering that when the vehicle is moving they may be a distraction to the driver or mean the drivers fails to see a red/blue/green/ other light outside that ends up getting your 9 seater scratched.
The easiest way to deal with it is have a read of the Road Vehicle Lighting regs (not before bed though).  To avoid any hassle adopt the idea of no whites to the rear and no reds to the front.  If you think of the cruisers and lights under their vehicles, its the difference between being able to see the lamp (LED) (naughty)  or being the reflected light (Not naughty) - the latter is the way they deal with lighting up their vehicles with such dayglo colours.
