Athena system 'offline' software developer confirms

The Athena IT platform, used by nine police forces in England and Wales, has been down for more than 24 hours.

It was taken offline for a planned software upgrade on Monday night and we understand officers still cannot access the system.

The system allows forces to share information more effectively managing intelligence, investigation, custody details, case preparation and warrants from the same system.

A spokesman for the software's developers, Northgate Public Services, told Police Oracle: "Athena was taken offline for a planned software upgrade overnight.

"This work has taken longer than originally planned.

"We are keeping all police forces affected informed of the situation and each force has implemented alternative processes as is standard practice when such maintenance is undertaken. We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused."

The system is used by forces including Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Kent, Norfolk and Suffolk.

Police Oracle understands forces have gone back to using emails or previous systems including tuServ for time being.

The system was introduced in Essex in April 2015 but officers were initially forced to resort to pen and paper to process suspects through custody because the system was not functioning properly a week after it had launched.

Its launch in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire was then delayed in 2016 after concerns were raised.

We have asked forces affected by this issue for a comment.
